Smarter than carries, more casual than blazers

I need advice... what to wear over vest tops/nice tshirts that is smarter than a cardigan. Blazers feel too constricting or too formal somehow.
What do people wear?!

Vest jumpers (sleeveless jumpers) are popular right now. They don't suit me but maybe you'll be lucky!

Also, I don't think blazers are too formal. Some of them are formal but there are casual styles. I think you could wear something like these with pretty much anything (I don't have much time now or I'd look for quieter colours and more casual styling! Don't be put off by my examples!).

The other option (what I do) is to get a fairly casual-looking trench coat (i.e., not fitted, which is a popular style right now and is therefore often very affordable). I have one that's water-resistant and one that's fabric and wear them everywhere. They're great because they look nice, they don't cling anywhere or get damaged easily (like knitwear), and they can be worn with anything from jeans to work clothes. GOod luck.

There's a few cardis around at the moment that are a bit smarter with gold/ bronze buttons. I've got this one from Zara and I really like it

@MayIDestroyYou, I really like these. Where are they?

OP, I forgot to mention tweed jackets, which are quite popular right now. I'm trying to sew one but there are versions available at many stores.

AnnPerkins · 03/10/2023 11:10

For comfort I wear an open shirt over a tshirt but that is probably too casual and you might not be suffering hot flushes like me.

I have just bought this corduroy blazer in black from Seasalt which looks nice with trousers and jeans.

Heald Cord Blazer

A short, fitted cord blazer with patch pockets and flattering princess seams. Pair with jeans or our matching Dillwyn Cord Trouser.

@Antst if you tap to enlarge each photo you’ll see the shop it’s from. The Janis jacket is La Fetiche. (Very expensive, purely for inspiration, not suggesting anyone rush out and bankrupt themselves.)

rookiemere · 03/10/2023 12:11

Something like this thisisunfolded.com/products/yasmynn-sustainable-corduroy-shacket-olive ?

MotherofGorgons · 03/10/2023 12:12

I am wearing a cord blazer not dissimilar to the Seasalt one from a Turkish company. Also a trench.

Some of the boucle jackets in stores look nice, though I find the gold buttons often too shiny.

piscofrisco · 03/10/2023 12:17

Light weight bomber jacket? I've got a silky one from Zara-bit heavier than a cardy and a bit more dressy, but not as formal or stiff as a blazer.

EllaMenopee · 03/10/2023 12:41

I find this difficult too, having reasonably narrow shoulders but big boobs. I love the look of blazers but they never fit right.

I've seen a couple of cropped chanel jacket inspired cardigans but the buttons tend to be blingy/military look.

Isometimeswonder · 03/10/2023 22:14

Thanks everyone, plenty to think about.

@EllaMenopee, I know what you mean about the buttons. They'd be easy enough to replace though. There are some great buttons out there.

There was a really long thread, with some great links the other day!
