Smart casual outfits for broad shoulders and narrow hips

EpitomeofEpiphany · 30/09/2023 16:19

I've just gone from size 16 to size 12 so I feel better about my body but I still don't know what suits me. I've still got a bit of a tummy pouch so can't wear anything too tight on their. My shoulders are quite broad, small boobs and narrow hips.

I wear smart casual clothes for work and need some new outfits. I like the look of high waisted mum jeans but they look silly on me because of my narrow hips.

Any tips on how to make the best of my figure. Or suggestions on what to wear?
At the moment I just wear black leggings and a long loose fitted top. I need more variety and style.

Thanks

You would probably do better in clothes that create volume from the waist down.

Wool or cord trousers with pleats at the front; A line skirts; or this shape of dress:

And definitely a waisted jacket, rather than the oversized from the shoulders down current fashion.

What’s your budget?

Broad shoulders, small bust and narrow hips makes me think of Katherine Hepburn, that kind of 1940s and 50s tailoring with a slightly masculine edge.

Check out Sezane/Maje/ba&sh/the Ines de la Fressange range at Uniqlo - I can imagine you in some wonderful wide leg wool trousers, a silk blouse casually tucked in, open at the neck with a couple of layered necklaces.

(Oh, I left out the words ‘wide legged’ - though I hope it’s obvious!)

@CountryCousin thanks for those they are very stylish. Yeah I see what you mean about needing to go large with the shape and textures on the bottom half.

I don't really have a budget I'm more after ideas on what to go for. Like what combos...like mom jeans, vest top and open long shirt is a big no no.
What other combos are there...that will suit me? I'm a bit clue less. Like long or short cardigen? And with what? Skirt or trousers, and what length.

Your suggestions are lovely but I wear more casual than that for work. I'm mid 30's too if that makes a difference.

@Xiaoxiong I'm going to give the wide trousers and silk blouse a go, thank you! I'll have a look at those stores.
