Black dress for funeral

marshmallowdreams · 03/09/2023 15:37

A very close and young family member has died suddenly. I'm not really functioning properly atm but I need to get something to wear to the funeral. I would like a black dress but don't know where to look? Has anyone got any ideas?

I meant to say- I'm very sorry for your loss

xyz111 · 03/09/2023 16:36

Some families like to wear colour to the funeral. Have the family said anything about funeral arrangements? Sorry for your loss xx

marshmallowdreams · 03/09/2023 17:43

Thanks for all the good suggestions. There's nothing quite my style and I would like to be able to wear whatever I buy again. The funeral will be held in an extremely rural and remote community where black is the norm for funerals. I have good black clothing options already but they all involve trousers which I'm not sure would be considered appropriate. I'm probably overthinking but I can't actually think straight atm due to shock and grief.

And also thanks for your supportive messages. It really is an awful time.

On recommendation of people on here I bought this dress for my dad's funeral and it was brilliant. Lovely fabric, draped nicely, very comfortable.

Sorry for your loss.

I am sorry for your loss. I was in the same situation a few weeks back, Marks and Spencer have a good choice of plain black dresses. Chose dresses in the menu and then use the filter to narrow it down to black.

ididntwanttodoit · 03/09/2023 18:04

@Hopingforagreatescape perfect choice!!

CarpeDiem83 · 03/09/2023 18:18

I'm sorry for your loss.

I wore the below to my mum's funeral a couple of weeks ago and realised at the wake that one of her cousins had it on as well! We both had (different) blazers over it which made it look smarter than in the pics. I've had it for ages and usually wear it for work. It's comfy, smart and has pockets.

Hi OP, definitely let mumsnet do the work for you here :). You’ve got other things to think about. Let’s narrow down what you need a bit though.
What temperature is it likely to be?

  • 10-20 degrees?
  • 20-30 degrees?
  • or 30+?
What sort of length do you prefer?
  • midi to full length?
  • knee length or midi?
  • knee length or above?
What size do you generally wear?

Do you usually prefer sleeves or does it not matter to you?

Is there anything about your shape you usually need to think about when you buy clothes?
eg. Bigger/smaller boobs, bigger hips? Very long back?

Do you have any fabric loves/hates? I hate polyester but am ok with viscose, for example.

Finally, what’s you budget?

  • under 50quid
  • under 100quid
  • under 150quid
  • no budget restrictions

If you’re quirky, Disturbia has some nice black dresses

marshmallowdreams · 03/09/2023 20:33

Thank you all for being so kind. Some great suggestions here. My main problem is that I very rarely wear dresses. I currently wear a Cos balloon skirt dress occasionally but that's about it. I wear lot of Cos/Arket clothes generally. The weather will be as cold and windy as it gets in the UK. We don't yet have a funeral date but likely to be in 2-3 weeks. I'm an 8/10, 5'5", slightly busty. Not keen on my legs, arms fine. I'm 50's but dress younger.
The person who has died was a very close relative and I want to look my best for them if that makes sense?

marshmallowdreams · 03/09/2023 20:35

I have a long back and short legs. Sleeves not a concern.

Don't have a budget but don't particularly want to spend a fortune.

Jasper Conran has absolutely lovely quality looking black shirt dress on website and a couple of other black examples. Alternatively, Phase Eight have a few black dresses of different designs on sale. I'm sorry for your loss. It's a shame it's so hard just to go to a shop now and get sorted out. When my mother died years ago and I had a small child and no time the lovely staff in my local Hobbs sorted me out with great sensitivity and kindness.

This one? Really effing expensive for a viscose frock.

Black, very smart, satin so quite shiny and formal looking. Perhaps not warm enough? But you could wear tights and even a top underneath if you needed to.

Black based with a pattern, again quite lightweight fabrics:

More of a work-wear vibe but very funeral appropriate:

reminds me of cos

If you don’t often do dresses, would something tshirt shaped make you feel comfortable. I think this would look very smart with some jewelry and black leather boots:

Or a big oversized shirt dress style? It’s a less formal style but would be very comfortable. It would still look very smart brand new with black leather boots, perhaps a belt around the waist, and maybe a gold or silver necklace visible an the open neck.

I got one from popsy for my mil funeral recently. They have a few different styles in black. They fit really well and are generally quite modest in the sleeve and length so well suited to a funeral.

My “go to” dress for funerals is from Cos. There are quite a few suitable ones there at the moment.

But I expect the smart black trousers you have will be fine, and that you don’t need to buy anything new. So long as you are soberly dressed. I have been to country funerals more than 20 years ago, where women wore navy blue trousers, and a blouse.

I’m so sorry for your loss.
