What do people wear out out these days?

I’m a mum to an almost 1 year old and I’m going on a night out with colleagues just before I start back at work. I used to think I was quite cool but I’m feeling very out the loop with what people wear these days for a night out.
I’m early 30s and consider myself to be quite young/hipster in style. I’m more Topshop than Boden and I’m def not a flowery midi and white trainers type. I love a jumpsuit but I’m quite short and booby so they don’t always suit.
It’s not a super glam night, more casual dinner then a few drinks in a couple of bars.
Anyone suggestions of brands or garments based on that vague spec?

What is your budget?
Spec is too vague.

Only comment I can make is the last work event I went to was a barbecue in June and there were a lot of cotton midi and maxi dresses, worn by all ages.

I doubt very much that "what to wear on a casual works night out" has changed dramatically from when before you went on maternity leave. What would you have worn then?

I’d spend the money on something you will get your money’s worth from, so a nice top and some wide legged trousers. Something you can wear separately as well.

Oliver Bonas have some nice tops and skirts/ wide leg trousers at the moment

I’m seeing a lot of neutral around lately, particularly with the transition into autumn (although this week coming looks lovely!) so a neutral sand/beige oversized blazer, white top and jeans (not skinny!) is what I would think of as a go to for a lot of events.

the silk/satin slip skirts are still very in, can be dressed up or down and I’m intending to keep wearing them into the autumn with jumpers and boots.

The hardest part of an outfit lately I think is footwear. In the winter boots can make it a lot simpler, although I’ve noticed a lot of people wearing boots over the summer, but then it’s not been too warm this year.

Satin slip skirt (maxi or midi) plus a t shirt or vest is a good shout. I think it looks best with a slightly boxy or boyish top, so that it avoids being too much of a 90s pastiche. Biker jacket on top if it's cooler outside.

Buying something I’ll get my money’s worth from is kind of my aim, but I’m so out the loop I’m scared to commit! Wide legged trousers I could wed get involved with, thanks.

Do you know, OB is only somewhere I’ve ever popped in to pass the time in my local station and I didn’t really realise until recently they had a lot to offer clothes-wise, will have a look on the website.

Yeah agreed, seeing beige/cream everywhere. I’m scared I’m too pale for it but maybe I need to relaunch myself with a bit more of a tan.
Was looking at some silky/leather midi skirts earlier and yeah, footwear is where I’m not sure how to go! But I like the skirt idea.

think this is where I’m headed. I just need to get the T-shirt part right so I don’t look like I was breastfeeding just before I left the house and forgot to change tops😬

Are your colleagues coming straight from work as I assume? Then anything that vaguely matches that would be ok. Not sure how casual your office is but mine is definitely very sartorially broad so anything goes! The silk/satin skirt with a simple t-shirt top still feels pretty current

Actually no! It’s actually a night out involving a couple of people who’ve moved elsewhere so it’s later on in the evening. I work in a school where we’re more smart than casual so actually everyone would get changed even if they were going straight out!
