Buying Chanel as an investment ? Anyone done this ?

I've got some spare cash and I've Been considering buying a couple of classic Chanel flap bags as investments and just putting them aside to see if they go up in value

They would be from Vestiaire Collective so they are verified and genuine

Chanel does not seem to go down in price or even remain static; in fact they've shot up massively over the last ten years

I was just wondering if anyone else has done this ? Not just with Chanel but other high end brands as well and if so which ones?

If you have to sell through a third-party, you'll lose a percentage. Have you checked that out?

Yes that's very true!

I will look at resale commission costs

The only brands that I would consider investments are Chanel (Classic flap bag) and Hermes Kelly or Birkin.

You are right that Chanel does keep putting their prices up, but if you bought a bag at say 4/5 k now, in a few years you might make a grand after postage /resale fees.

Depending on interest rates you could almost make the same with a savings account.

I would be more inclined to buy a piece of solid gold 18k jewellery at auction, enjoy wearing it for a bit and sell it in a few years.

There's been issues with people buying fakes from Vestiaire so there's no guarantee there. Reselling them somewhere reputable usually comes at a high commission.

You have to realise that at this point you're buying at the peak or close to it, the major jumps in value have already happened. I don't think the Chanel/Hermès investments are a bubble about to burst but it can't grow in the same exponential way forever especially with Chanel continually ramping up production, a slowdown is inevitable, add in insurance, the right conditions to keep them in for collectors and the eventual payout isn't as great as imagined and if you're ever in a pinch and need to sell quick you may come out even or at a loss .

The secondhand Rolex market has gone from great growth to lows as people have moved on and are no longer interested, the luxury good space can be very fickle and currently luxury retail as a whole isn't performing very well. As above, if you want a sensible investment there's better options with less work and headaches involved, if you like a risky investment it's probably best to look at something that's yet to really lift off and accept the possibility of a loss.

Yes I'm only considering the classic flaps

I blooming wish I had bought one ten years ago.
You could get them for around £1000-1500 iirc

@mickgravey I know!! Absolutely crazy prices now.

1AnotherOne · 27/08/2023 19:28

I bought a Chanel in 2009 for £1300, it’s now worth nearly £9k. I don’t know how much they’ll keep going up but I certainly wouldn’t buy one now unless it’s for keeps

I think I might just buy the one for myself, as I do absolutely love them and never been in the position to own one

I've seen at least one I absolutely love on Vestiaire Collective ...but worried about using them now though as a poster upthread said they'd been known to sell fakes

The purse forum is rife with complaints about Vestiaire, it's mostly to do with Chanel and other high end bags. For the most part Vestiaire is pretty good but highly sought after items are risky. If you are seriously considering a Chanel bag on there it's always good to ask the posters on there to check the listing.

Ireolu · 27/08/2023 19:56

I bought classic flaps from the stores in 2015.
I wouldn't even consider buying now direct from store now. The thought of it being a fraction of the price then compared to now puts me off.
I would be weary of buying preloved especially from vestiaire. Lots of anecdotes of fakes sold as authentic. Too many to ignore even with their authentication.

I would not consider a handbag an investment. Anything bags included is only worth what a person is willing to pay. The downturn in the economy from what I can see has affected these selling on the preloved market. Several OK priced jumbos sitting unsold on other trusted sites (npn for example). If you love the bag and will use it buy it. If not put your money in proven earners.

nc14 · 27/08/2023 20:38

I bought a Chanel 2.55 (new) nearly 20 years ago for £1k. The same bag is now £8.5k. That said, I still think there are plenty of better options, especially with interest rates as they are!

Wow that's crazy (and I bet it's beautiful 😍)

Do you think you'd ever sell ?

It’s a classic so I’ll probably wear it until I’m old and then leave it to a daughter or a niece (should I have one - currently only one DS, no nieces!).

Having been in this position & far happier now I would rather sell than accumulate, my thoughts are let the items gather dust 🤣
