Brand Perception - Coach, Tory Burch or Anya Hindmarch

So I want to get a new handbag - something for everyday. I like smallish crossbody bags. Am toying between Coach, Anya Hindmarch and Tory Burch. My question is which one do you perceive as being more high-end? I like Coach but now it is available in John Lewis, does that make it high street and mass market?

Anya Hindmarch is highest of those 3. Coach seems to be going down the Michael Kors route.

Teentaxidriver · 25/08/2023 20:24

I keep reading about how amazing the leather used for Burch and Coach handbags. I have a few Anya Hindmarch bags already. I guess I want something a bit different, but that doesn’t break the bank.

I used to love coach and buy a lot but I haven’t purchased since their brand ambassador spewed homophone abuse at NY pride and they did nothing and I’ve sworn off Kate spade since they hired that revolting misogynist Dylan Mulvaney.

Anya H has the highest cachet of those three but she's a massive Tory donor so she would be out for me on that alone.

Coach bags are still pretty well made.

Tory B makes me think of WASPish Americans.

Not sure that's helpful, sorry.

@Teentaxidriver really?? AH quality is usually better than both those brands. Her designs seem to have 'gone off the boil' in recent years but she's more designer and much less mass market 'department store' than Coach or Tory Burch.

Teentaxidriver · 25/08/2023 20:52

Off to look at the AH website. Are there other brands anyone would recommend? I had a look at the Mulberry website but the bags feel either too trendy or too traditional.

What about Strathberry?

Aspinal or Smythson?

Alternatively, the leather at Rise and Fall is excellent and they do a cross body bag.

Thank you so much ladies. Reasons not to buy Coach or Burch noted.

Coach are good if you want a workhorse of a bag - the quality for the price is excellent, although I do feel the hardware lets it down a bit ( the gold on one of mine is wearing, but the leather looks like new).

Personally I think you should buy the bag you love the look of, rather than getting too hung up on brand perception.

I've got coach bags that last and last. Its the only bag brand i buy apart from a few older mulberries which i stopped as the quality to price fell.

Been buying coach for about 15 years. Used to get them on US holidays. Not really heard of the other brands.

Do like Aspinal and Smythson but they always have a very dull feel to their designs. A great work bag.

I fancied a leopard print Kate spade but now animal print is ubiquitous I'm glad I held off.

I saw a nice Cole hahn (?) On 5th Ave new york last year and disappointed I didn't just buy it.

Strathberry do gorgeous bags! Demellier and Polene are lovely too if you are looking for new brands.

Nothing wrong with the ones you have mentioned though. I try to ignore the labels and choose the bag I love the most but sometimes it is hard to!

DramaAlpaca · 26/08/2023 00:27

I have a few Strathberry bags and I think they are great quality. I also love Mulberry.

I'm not a fan of any of the brands in the OP and always go for bags I like the look of rather than whose name is on it.

I agree with Polene as a good shout for something cool but not everywhere, and Aspinal as a classic brand.

MrsWobble3 · 26/08/2023 01:07

I like Longchamp too. Not sure how it ranks as a brand but think it’s around the same price point as Coach so would assume similar.
