Does this dress look like a nightie?

Hi, going on a vary rare night out in city centre, and have literally nothing but leggings and sweatshirts in my wardrobe so treating myself to a new outfit. Thoughts on this dress please, I think it's lovely but can't help it resembles a nightie, I'd like your honest views (guarantee on mumsnet) .. I've ordered some black trousers and camisole top too which is my safe option..

I don’t think it looks like a nightie, but I think it’s too long. There are lots of nicer satin slip dresses around and they’re nice dressed down a bit.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2023 08:21

And there’s lots of things in between a full on gown and black trousers!

ToughFuss · 24/08/2023 08:21

It’s pretty nightie-like but I don’t think that’s necessarily a reason not to wear it. Personally I think a full length dress like that for a night out in any city would be very overdressed.

TheLastPictureShow · 24/08/2023 08:27

It does look like a nightie, but that 90s shiny slip trend is in! To keep it on point, wear it with chunky trainers and a casual crossbody bum bag.

(No heels or sparkles!)

dudsville · 24/08/2023 08:29

It's a nightie style of dress. When i see these i do think of the 90s when women wore slips as dresses.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/08/2023 08:30

I think it looks like a nightie and I also think that is a challenging fabric to look good in.

mondaytosunday · 24/08/2023 08:31

Seems a bit dressy to me unless you are going to a special theatre or very posh restaurant.
And yes it does look like lingerie but that's the idea, isn't it?

CharlotteStreetW1 · 24/08/2023 08:32

Unfortunately the lace - and possibly the colour - gives it a nightie look.

It reminds me of a nightie and negligee set my dad bought my mum for Christmas one year - and he died in 1980 🙂

Is this for something like Christmas or black tie. Otherwise a little overkill for a Sat night out (but then I'm ancient so maybe not).

Makeitbetterplease · 24/08/2023 08:33

It’s far too dressy and does look like a nightie. Sorry.

Cosycover · 24/08/2023 08:34

Where are you going?

CurlewKate · 24/08/2023 08:35

Pretty- but black tie event rather than night out? Or am I very old fashioned?

Findyourneutralspace · 24/08/2023 08:35

Depends where you’re going. Might be a bit much for the local boozer but would be nice for something dressier

Devonshirelass · 24/08/2023 08:36

Yes, a nightie. And quite an old fashioned one.

Xrays · 24/08/2023 08:38

Far too dressy for a night out in a city centre. Not a fan, sorry.

Oh, yes it may be for an event as opposed to ‘just’ a Saturday night out. That’s my mistake.

this

WAY too dressed up

Passerillage · 24/08/2023 08:45

It's too long on the model and she is in very high heels, so unless they have put a VERY short girl into the dress for the photo, you're going to need very high heels to keep it up off the ground, and it's going to look minging v fast.

Assuming you're going on a glizy cocktails/clubbing night out?

If you want a glam dress in that vein how about:

Passerillage · 24/08/2023 08:46

(The nightie look is very much back in, so I wouldn't worry about that too much, and personally I miss the days of the Coast satin cami top for going out!😳)

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/08/2023 08:52

It does, but my sister got married in a very similar cream coloured nightie (Calvin Klein) and sequinned leather flip flops. Looked fab.

NatashaDancing · 24/08/2023 09:09

I don't think it looks like a nightdress but isn't that way OTT for a night out in a city centre?

Where are you going and who with?

RampantIvy · 24/08/2023 09:28

IMO black trousers and a camisole is a better option.

TheOGCCL · 24/08/2023 09:31

The colour seems more Caribbean holiday than night out in the UK

uncomfortablydumb53 · 24/08/2023 09:34

I think it is, sorry
It's the length and the lace for me

It's a black tie or red carpet dress, if you're entitled to be on the red carpet.
