What could I wear to this wedding?

WasteOfPaint · 23/08/2023 21:23

I'm going to a wedding at the end of September. It will be in a rural/largely outdoor setting, the ground could be muddy depending on weather and guests are advised not to wear heels and that sturdy footwear may be needed. I guess it could also be quite cold at that time. The general vibe seems reasonably informal.

I'm quite restricted in what I can wear with my shape currently (sort of slim but with a belly) - nothing fitted around the stomach will work.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you! The first dress above is probably the right style but the colour isn't to my liking. The second dress...maybe, not sure. Biker boots is a good shout.

That's brilliant. I would never have thought of Warehouse.

I prefer the other 2 suggestions on the website because they have closed backs. They're all cotton and they all look much more expensive than they are.

Warehouse Alternative 1
Warehouse Alternative 2

I would wear either of these boots

@WasteOfPaint

Scamp and Dude tend to do lots of that styles dress in lots of colours, so have a browse through

Catsandbikes · 24/08/2023 10:19

Cos have just started a sale and there are some loose summery dresses on there that mught fit the bill!

MuddlerInLaw · 24/08/2023 11:45

Also ridiculously impressed with @LivelyBlake and @NatashaDancing‘s Warehouse picks. They’re breathtakingly pretty.

I haven’t stepped into a Warehouse this century - I know those dresses are bargains but are they actually as good in the flesh, or disappointingly thin?

MuddlerInLaw · 24/08/2023 12:11

(Disappointingly there doesn’t seem to be anything nearly as nice in the new season stock.)

WasteOfPaint · 04/09/2023 22:04

An update for those interested in the Warehouse dresses. I ordered the paisley dress that @LivelyBlake linked and the floral one that @NatashaDancing linked. The paisley one is nice but I couldn't handle the puff sleeves, made me look like an American footballer. The floral one is very nice, although maybe it makes a bit more of a statement than I would prefer to, and the sleeves are ridiculously massive. This is it:

It's fabulous on you. The sleeves make a statement but they're not ridiculously massive.

It looks far more expensive than it is and I'd never guess it was Warehouse. It could be Alemais or Zimmerman.

P.S I don't work for Warehouse !

MuddlerInLaw · 05/09/2023 03:23

Oh! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

You chose the size well. It fits brilliantly on the shoulders and bodice, and the sleeves end where they’re supposed to.

I would have the hem taken up, so you’ll have some visible leg + shoes / boots (better) to balance out the volume of fabric above - that way you won’t be all frock. (And will avoid hem contact with muddy ground.) Wear your chosen footwear while hem length is being decided. On my phone screen you could easily take up the width of my index finger across your photo - but you’ll know what looks and feels best.

It’s a proper bargain! It doesn’t look thin, the colours are true. Works well with your hair colour.

You will be ironing it, on both sides, won’t you? I’m wondering if starch would be good - for the skirt at least. Spray starch on the inside (try a tiny area near the hem first) just to ensure the colour is preserved.

Fabulous, darling!

CoveredWindows · 05/09/2023 04:30

I love that dress @WasteOfPaint

it looks very similar to Zimmerman ones I was drooling over in Harvey Nichols recently.

MidnightOnceMore · 05/09/2023 04:35

The dress is nice but for a wedding like this I'd wear trousers and wellies!

MuddlerInLaw · 05/09/2023 05:56

It’s a wedding, not a country fair!

And wellies could easily be accommodated beneath the lovely-but-cheap-enough-not-to-be-precious-about frock.

😜

WasteOfPaint · 05/09/2023 09:45

Thanks everyone! @MuddlerInLaw I wondered about the length - it's close to maxi length on me (and I'm 5'7). Maybe taking it up would be good. I just checked back to the website and it's definitely midi length on the model.

And yes, it def needs ironing.

Re the quality, yes it's not thin, the fabric seems really good quality. The only thing is the zip is a bit dodgy - I actually couldn't do it up at all and was going to return it on that basis, but DH can somehow do it.

So...thoughts on boots to go with it?

OP posts:
MuddlerInLaw · 05/09/2023 10:12

Ffs - just deleted my own post!

Hem - yes … Large turn up to keep weightiness of fabric so it hangs well.

Boots?

Lanx, as suggested above. Very pretty.

Grenson Good looking and fashionable. Lots to choose from. I probably wouldn’t buy full price because they’re not as waterproof as one might hope. Angry But you will be assailed with exclamations of I love your boots!

Trickers Sturdy and country-looking. I humbly apologise to all for linking boots that cost more than Primark. I acknowledge your disdain and outrage and will endeavour to do better in the future …

MuddlerInLaw · 05/09/2023 10:16

Shame about the zip (good thing not full price). Is something caught in it, or just badly attached?

The Warehouse dress stock is so odd. They do love a pattern! Some good dresses at the highest sale price, then solid polyester. But the rare cotton dresses are /were in a different league. (IMVHO)

WasteOfPaint · 05/09/2023 14:01

@MuddlerInLaw nothing is caught in it, just the fabric is very thick at the waistband and the zip struggles to get past that point.

The boots are lovely but out of budget I'm afraid😀

Okay, final question hopefully. What could I wear over it if it gets cold in the evening? I was thinking maybe a navy jacket/blazer?

OP posts:
MuddlerInLaw · 18/09/2023 12:40

Oh, don’t do that! You’ll turn it into office wear.

You need to beg, borrow or otherwise acquire a bit of sheepskin.

Cawley Studio is the sort of look I’m thinking of.

Plümo generally have woolly versions. And Sideline (which I only came across yesterday via one of @NatashaDancing‘s excellent lists) has shearling waistcoats and possibly other things the train Wi-Fi won’t currently show me …

But I’m pretty sure the pre-owned clothing universe is stuffed with this sort of thing.

(You’re going to look so cool …)

Maireas · 18/09/2023 12:45

Honestly, @WasteOfPaint I think the dress looks great on you - there's nothing wrong with making a statement. The sleeves aren't ridiculous. It just needs a good iron. Maybe shorten it a bit, if necessary. Wear warm boots. Not a navy blazer, please! A teddy coat or sheepskin jacket. Good link above.
