Please Help! Fluttery, non-polyester dress for my 70 year old mum?

Hello,
I'm trying to help my lovely mum who is a size 16-18, find a dress for a wedding..on Saturday!

I've spent a few hours trying to look for her today. She has a congenital sight-impairment, which makes seeing the details on websites a bit tricky on her iPad.

She thought she was all sorted but the dresses she ordered arrived today and aren't great. This thought she was all sorted but the dresses she ordered, this Jolie Moi Priya dress from John Lewis, she says the fabric feels like what my nana used to wear. She missed where it said Polyester blend. She gets hot and doesn't like the feel of that fabric, so looking for something similar or another style below the knee in lyocell, cotton, viscose, tencel, cotton-linen (though she doesn't like creases so much!). Jolie Moi Priya dress from John Lewis, she says the style is nice but the fabric feels like what my nana used to wear in the 80s! She missed where it said poly blend.
She gets hot and doesn't like the feel of that fabric, so looking for something similar or another style below the knee in lyocell, cotton, viscose, tencel, cotton-linen, any other suggestions welcome.

Anywhere we shop will need to be next day delivery or somewhere I can collect (I'm in London, she is in the North of England). I'm travelling on Friday evening up to her.

Please let me know if you have any recommendations up to £100, which I know is a long shot. I don't usually wear fluttery ruffly things, so I'm at a loss!

I should also mention she is quite young-feeling and fun-loving, so she is quite open to styles as long as they are below the knee and have something of a sleeve - short/cap etc.

Any tips on her colouring? Was the Priya the deep green one?

Evenstar · 22/08/2023 20:35

Have you tried David Nieper some lovely dresses and they are normally natural fabrics. They haven’t got next day delivery, things have come quickly when I ordered, but do have an actual shop in Derbyshire. https://www.davidnieper.co.uk/

Lacacahuete · 22/08/2023 20:44

Thanks for checking @PermanentTemporary She is deep golden-olive tone skin with blondey-grey long bob hair.

The Priya dress she ordered in Teal https://www.johnlewis.com/jolie-moi-priya-frill-dipped-hem-midi-dress/teal/p109746071
Somehow I messed up the link in my original post oops!

She wears colours like mustard, bright blue/light blues, oranges, olive green, khaki, burgundy etc and tends towards plain dresses/large patterned styles not so much ditsy prints. She reminds me of a vibrant bird of paradise flower :)

I found this dress in her size on vinted but we've run out of time for that. She said she loved it: https://www.phase-eight.com/product/shaniya-printed-linen-dress-20670961512.html

Shaniya Printed Linen Dress |

A cool linen dress with a print made for summer. Our team have worn this style to the office, wedding receptions and on holiday - it really is a do-it-all dress.

Gorgeous. Is it worth contacting the seller and asking about collecting the dress/courier/special delivery? I don't know Vinted that well.

I am completely with her on the fabric, but the combination of fabric, budget and time constraint is tricky.

Therefore what about hiring? Girl Meets Dress is a big site and seem to offer lots of sizes and fast delivery? Eg this pink Diane von Furstenburg

That is so lovely and dvf..I'd like that in black for myself :)
It is probably a bit short for her. I will check out the website though, not a bad idea to hire as we often only wear these things once if a few times!

This is a good shout, thanks! I'll take a look. It's a bit more than she planned to spend but also look like dresses she could wear more than once so a good investment.

I didn't even think about that. Great idea.

Style and fabric you’re describing sound spike Ghost dresses would work brilliantly…

Monsoon often do viscose or cotton. Would Monsoon at Debenhams Teal Dress suit her? Next day delivery is available.

Your mum sounds cool, how about
https://www.anthropologie.com/en-gb/shop/the-somerset-maxi-dress-embroidered-edition?category=dresses&color=041&type=REGULAR&quantity=1&size=L

it’s not really fluttery per se, but pretty, not a sweat-dress (as we call them😂) and it’s a great price...

that's beautiful too! I think she could carry it off <3

I've sent this to her, she loves the colours. I think she prefers a bit of a lower neckline but I could totally see her in that. She could wear anything really, she needs a bit more confidence :)

Just wanted to say thanks to you all! It's been helpful to see what you all think and it's helped my mum. She's got some direction for her shopping trip tomorrow!

Is this too ditsy? There’s probably an & Other Stories in her local town / city.

Here to also suggest the Somerset - they usually have different colours
