Blazers - here to stay or over with now?

What's your opinion on the staying power of the oversize blazer trend? I've so far resisted as I'm not sure the oversized and longer shape will suit me. I tend to go for cropped, nipped in jackets on the hip that give me a waist and longer legs. However I've just caved in and ordered a cream one in the summer sales because all of the influencers and mags (and MN) insist they're the most versatile garment and everyone needs one. I figure I'll wear it with wide legged trousers, jeans and over a dress I've planned for a wedding in September.
Will I get much wear out of it or is the blazer trend kind of already over? Assuming it looks good and I don't look big and square like a wardrobe in it 😄

I sat this trend out as I hardly ever like blazers on me. But it looks great with the outfits you described

If it doesn't suit you and you don't like it don't force it. Im seeing plenty of cropped jackets with wide-legged trousers

There's nothing that everyone needs. Listening to such nonsense statements will only make you a victim of fashion, since inevitably there will come a trend that does not look good on you.

If you like how it looks and how it feels when it comes, keep it. If you don't, send it back.

'Blazers' are certainly here to stay. They're just a standard option for women's formal/smart wear. Whether oversize... it depends. A looser fit will always be fine, even if the fashion is more for tighter wear, because there's always a variety, whereas something that's very oversize will stand out as looking a few sizes too big.

Wear the blazer that suits you especially if it's for work and definitely not what's in fashion

Influencers are given these items for free so people like you go out and buy what doesn't suit them because they think it's in fashion.

It's really not in fashion not really just worn by people following influencers. Which isn't really proper fashion

Thanks, I 100% agree re: fashionability. I like to observe what's current but am happy to let some of it sail on by if it's not for me. I picked up some wide legged trousers I'd ordered today and well, let's just say I need to experiment with some shoe and top options. Not sure they flatter my shape tbh 🙄I do think it's good to try new trends from time to time though. Keeps you feeling fresh/current. But also accept when it's just not 'you' I guess.

I wear both. I like the oversize look. I'm over caring whether clothes flatter me or not and a big blazer adds a spring to my step and a whistle to my lips (not literally - I can't whistle but it makes me feel like I can). But I also really enjoy a fitted jacket with a Dior New Look vibe. I refuse to pick a team.

Like Flo , I have no interest in whether clothes flatter me or not. It's the item of clothing which interests me.

I like over sized coats and oversized dresses but blazers have never been a thing for me. But if you like them OP, go for it.

My uneducated guess is that it's possible that the oversize silhouette has reached its peak but that it's been on the scene long enough not to disappear overnight. I would think it'll be at least a couple of years before it starts to look 'off'. However certain features, e.g. ruched sleeves might not have as good a shelf life and start to look a bit dated before then.

Yes, I'm not sure about pushing my jacket sleeves up. Not if you're old enough to remember Miami Vice.

Every influencer I’ve seen in an oversized blazer has to push up the sleeves or tuck a hand in a trouser pocket to stop themselves being swamped by all that fabric. I’d give the trend a miss as I can’t walk around like that all day.

I refuse to even attempt an oversized blazer. I'd just look like I went to my dad's wardrobe and I'm 8. I have noticed that there's a far more corporate look creeping in, far more tailored and heels coming back too..I do prefer the tailored look but despise heels so praying that flats (trainers) will still be ok for work.

I am and I can't get past that thought. It wasn't a great look then and age hasn't improved it.

I ignored the summery ones as I just thought they wouldn’t work for me but just bought one that is almost houndstoothy tweedy that I am breaking out on 1st Sept with either skinny or boyfriend jeans and nike airforces.

I don't think anyone should buy something that doesn't flatter them just because it's fashionable. It has to look nice as well.
See how you feel when it arrives and be ruthless - if you don't think you'll really wear it or you think it isn't the best look for you, then send it straight back.

I think blazers generally are here to stay but shapes and details go in and out of fashion. I do think the ruched sleeves have a shelf life and are probably nearing the end of it soon. I'm not a fan of oversized personally - I like a blazer with a bit of shape but they do look really good on some people so see when it arrives.

The other thing is that it sometimes takes a bit of time to mentally adjust to seeing different shapes - remember when we all wore bootcut jeans with hems dragging through puddles and how weird it looked at first when skinnies were everywhere?

@narniabusiness Nailed it. Some of the models I've seen look buried in fabric. They'd look ridiculous out and about IRL.
@Diddykong I also worry about repeating what I think of as the 'Howards Way' aesthetic if you're old enough to remember that as well 😄 Blazers with shiny gold buttons, silky tops, long pleated skirts, big earrings and court shoes.. although a lot of that HAS come back. All we need now is for blue eyeshadow and backcombed permed hair to return and we'll be set.
I've looked back at what I've ordered and I really like the colour - not too light/white so not just limited to summer wear hopefully. I don't want it to be too form fitting as I'm planning to wear it over a dress with sleeves but equally I won't suit something shapeless. Ah well, we'll see I suppose.

Ruching aside, I think the oversize blazers that will date the fastest are the ones in really flimsy, often shiny fabric that serve no recognisable function. They don't add any warmth, they certainly don't keep you dry and I don't regard them as much more than a fashion accessory.

I'll be so bold as to predict that the ones in heavier linen or cotton, wool, tweed etc, i.e that have an actual job to do, will survive the longest.

To answer the OP's question oversized blazers in dark colours and/or heavier fabrics (wool suiting / wool gaberdine, tweed) will last until they wear out or you get sick of them. Ones in light colours and fabrics won't.

That's not what I meant and am pretty certain not what Flo meant. I'm a 5'5, size 14/16 curvy, pale-skinned blonde. Would the OP's jacket flatter me? I have no idea - It's fashionable and it might be the most flattering jacket ever invented for my body type and colouring but I still wouldn't wear it.

I think it's beautiful - the design looks like a painting, because it started life as a painting. I get a spring in my step wearing it. I don't know @NatashaDancing - the OP has ordered it because fashion people have told her it's a staple and everyone should have it. She's not sure it will suit her.
They say the same about white shirts. I've not yet found one that suits me and I'm 49 and it's not for lack of looking.

I don't believe there's any one item that everyone should have. I don't think it's enough for an item to be fashionable - I do think it being flattering is important too.

I think the influencer version (mid-hip, beigey, must-roll sleeves) is looking fairly played out but perhaps that's just testament to their oversaturation in my area this summer. COS have some nice oversized but cropped options at the moment: I just bought this. As you say you generally favour shorter lengths they might be an easier way to play with the oversized proportion (which isn't going anywhere, IMO).

Well that's part of what I'm saying too. I wouldn't buy that green blazer no matter how fashionable it is, or even if, in theory, it's meant to flatter my body type, because I don't like it.

But "flattering" for me doesn't have to mean, does it suit my colours/ show off my curves/ show off my figure ? An amazing item of clothing can be "flattering" simply because it's beautiful to look at and lifts your spirits to wear.

I much prefer that. That's really good. Baum und Pferdgarten had similar styles in their spring/ summer range.
