Bad haircuts of Manchester

I have wiry, very thick hair that rarely looks good. I have zero styling skills. I keep it short. I have tried, without success, for literally years to get a hairdresser who gets what I want. Occasionally, they will do as I ask. Yet without fail, they forget - "Yes, I know what you want" and cut it how they want. I do not go back. I search for another hairdresser.

I have it cut every 5-6 weeks and I give two attempts to see whether they will do as I ask. I am not one of those women who think they will magically turn into said celebrity on pictures but I do show a picture and explain what I want: No parting. As short at the back and sides as possible without a visible line defining where it is longer - graduated. I don't want my fringe swept to one side. I don't want some weird notch cut into my fringe on one side. Please cut my fringe after it is dried as it springs up and won't be all one length. I show them this - https://www.instagram.com/p/CrgAWkGN_dL/

I would not even mind if they said, "your hair won't do that, how about...." Or even "I don't cut short hair - all I can do is dye it and cut it into a one length bob if it's straight". Or even "I don't like the look of you, get out". I can cope with all that but I get affirmation that they can do it.
So yet AGAIN I have returned home with what can only be described as a pyrex bowl haircut. Cunningly glued down at the sides with some revolting substance which, now brushed out, shows what an appalling cut it is. I knew she hadn't listened to a word when she said - after cutting it - "which side do you want your fringe sweeping to?"
What am I doing wrong? I'm polite. I'm chatty. Make all the right noises when they're talking at me. I've paid big bucks at salons and every price point in between. I've even tried a few barbers.
It must be bad as husband has said "That's interesting".
Does anyone know of anywhere in the Manchester area - either the City centre or even one of the surrounding towns - that actually does as you ask? Or at least has the grace to explain why they can't and offer you an alternative before you come out looking like a lost piece of Lego.

And no, thankfully I cannot post a picture of offending haircut to critique/ laugh at.

Hi OP. I went to James Roberts in Manchester city centre for a while and they are fantastic. I couldn't afford to keep going but I was really happy with their service when I went. Basically they rescued my hair after an awful balayage. I've got a LOT of hair, although it's fine and wavy rather than wiry.

Daniel did my hair, I'm not sure if he is still there but I'd recommend him.

Melissa Timperly is amazing. Can personally vouch for Sara

WittynotPretty · 09/08/2023 19:41

Try Peter at Peter Marcus, in Manchester city centre and Didsbury. He's been cutting the DD's very curly, very thick hair for years and it always looks amazing.

I have short hair and go to a barber. They're much better with the clippers.

Thank you all so much. They all sound great so I shall see which is closest to work as my first choice then work my way outwards (or not, hopefully). Husband has completed an interim measure - number 8 (1 inch) at back and sides. It looks less "bowl-like". Though you don't really expect to pay for a cut and then finish it yourself at home and clear up the mess. I'm sure I must be speaking in martian. May you all have wonderful cuts for the rest of your days. x

Ashley at Moloko in the city centre is fab.

Rob at at RCNQ is great. First hairdressers I have come back to repeatedly, they listen and give you what you want.

Namechanged for this! You need that new chap in Urmston - he's opening next week - https://www.hairkingcallum.com

He cut my hair and I'm booked with him again. Great haircut

QueenKong101 · 10/08/2023 17:43

Try Rachel at George Frank in Didsbury. She's ace!

LlynTegid · 10/08/2023 20:34

Hope something works.

(I thought of a number of 'Manchester' bands of the 90s though they were men with bad haircuts!!)

Quite difficult to get in with Liam as he has a waiting list but he’s a hair genius

Katy at Marco Pani in Altrincham is amazing. She pulls no punches and will tell you if your desired cut can't be done and whether a cut would suit you/work for you/is even possible. I used to have a pixie cut which she cut in beautifully, now she is helping me grow it out.

Dominik at James Roberts cuts my short hair and has done for years now. Unassuming and really listens. Daniel is still there. They have some great stylists.

Swoon on Bridge St are really good. Although not quite as good since amazing Michelle left ☹️
