leggings under dresses - will they be in this spring/summer or will I feel like a dork?

I tried on this dress today, and, if I may say so, it looked totally delightful upon me. Apart from one teeny issue...it is about an inch too short and exposes my less than perfect knees...knees that never normally are allowed to see the light of day (they really are hideous)...so I didn't get it. But am wondering whether could get and wear with 3/4 length leggings or some'at underneath? something that would allow me the beauty of the dress without the frankenstein's monster effect of my naked knees...maybe even over sme skinny jeans...or will that all dress over leggings/jeans thing have gone by the wayside and I'll look like a fool, a fool in a pretty dress but a fool nonetheless...

what say you gurus of style?

interested in this not for me but for dd1 and 2 who are both partial to this trend - and look lovely in it as well (proud mummy alert)

jeangenie · 27/02/2008 17:13

I bought a lovely dress and bought footless tights to go with it. Took the ensemble home. DH laughed and laughed and laughed.

I can hear the MN style gurus snickering into their stylish handbags as I write.

jeangenie · 27/02/2008 17:25

ack - what do men know

think I have some footless tights somewhere...that might work...

are they really sniggering? we need them to come on here and do it, just so we know where we stand...

I WANT TO BUY THAT DRESS!!!

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo! - they are 7 and 10 - does that make it less awful of me?

(NL flaps arms frantically and grimaces in efforts to convince she was casting no aspersions)

jeangenie · 27/02/2008 17:29

7 and 10?.....!

well, I'm only 39 so should be ok then...harrumph

Knees - no I would not buy it. Tights under dresses - especially footless tights look completely naff and 'trying too hard' - anyone seen primeval last weekend where Abi who is a babe is dressed in crapola 'edgy' gear.
There are lots of gorgeous dresses a couple of inches longer, would go for one of them. Are younear a brach of Kew? or East/ They have some gorgeous dresses.

moodlumthehoodlum · 27/02/2008 18:13

I am regretting buying the dress and the footless tights. I am going to shorten the dress and make it so it goes with jeans (stop laughing everyone). Actually I'm kidding, it was el cheapo and will end up in the charidee bin. I'm 33 not 13 so I think the footless tights suggestion was a cruel joke by the shop assistants.

ShakeysGirl · 27/02/2008 18:21

I wear short dresses/skirts with leggings but i wouldn't if i wasn't in my 20s iyswim.

jeangenie · 27/02/2008 22:00

why exactly did you hyperventilate NL, and pass out? do you need the salts my love?
and as for you shakeysgirl...harumph, I'm not exactly a granny, yet...
I know lots of late 30s mums who dress quite trendy, and I don't think they look at all ridiculous...
I'm in good shape etc, just have awful knees...and the dress just catches them in the middle

but it just does so much for me on top, it's gorgeous...

hmm, maybe will have to make my own decision on this own...

leggings are out-sorry

NorthernLurker · 27/02/2008 22:35

I was hyperventilating in mortification at having been pereceived to have potentially insulted your sense of style! Thanks for the offer of the smelling salts but I've managed to struggle to my feet and stagger out of the Style & Beauty section. I'm not sure I'll dare come back - the potential for foot in mouth disease is considerable

jeangenie · 27/02/2008 22:59

ack NL calm down love one of the benefits of being as ancient as I am is that you develop a nice thick skin, as well as horrendous knees

well, I bought it, but am already wishing it was an inch longer - it would look fabulous with some retro style heels. I am beginning to think that unless I lop an inch off my legs it won't work for me, so envisage a trip back to DP with it

it really is the most perfect dress - could someone else with better legs please buy it so I can live vicariously through you
