Curly girl experts: Where did my curls go?

I’ve been experimenting with curly girl products for a little over a year. Typical story of dry/damaged hair in pursuit of straight hair.

Left alone my hair has a 2c wave and a 3a curl with a bit of help from mousse, gel etc.

Over the last two years I’ve gone from dry/damaged hair to really good condition but in the last month I’ve lost my curls!?!?

With mousse/cream I can get a bit of curl but it falls away by the second day. Left to dry without any extra product it’s like candy floss.

My hairdresser (who isn’t an expert on curls) was a bit mystified, and said it might be hormonal. But it’s a very distinct change over about 4 weeks so I’m not sure it’s that.

Any ideas?

Lack of protein? Try a hair food. It sounds as if your hair is like mine. I like the Garnier coconut one.

Sexnotgender · 04/08/2023 20:17

over moisturised probably. Does your routine have protein in it?

johnnydeppsslipper · 04/08/2023 20:20

Too much moisture weighs heavy on curly hair.

Generally curly hair needs protein which is the opposite.

Go to a hood salon and ask for a stretch test and they will be able to advise you which it needs.

Hair that needs protein can look the same as hair that needs moisture,fluffy heavy unruly etc

Ahhh

I was advised by a hairdresser to avoid protein and concentrate on moisture but maybe I’ve taken it too far. My hair was very dry back then.

@johnnydeppsslipper fluffy dry and unruly describes it perfectly .

Off to google protein products

@Charrington

Did they do a wet stretch test for you?

johnnydeppsslipper · 04/08/2023 20:39

@Charrington
I've sent you a pm

My hair LOVES protein. Blueberry bliss leave in is fabulous, innersense daily colour conditioner is excellent but £££

nothernexposure · 04/08/2023 21:15

The blue aldi volume conditioner has protein in it and is as cheap as chips!

My one concession to pricy products is this Smallest of blobs when styling so it lasts a long time but got me my curls back.

Feather-light Protein Cream

Protein-enriched styler that combines the moisture of a cream with the flexible hold technology of a gel.
