How to hide a belly in a dress

Ok so this thread has come about following a Temu delivery. I had ordered a dress with a ruched (elasticated) waist and a v back with a frill. My, not insignificant, belly doesn't get a look in. I'm not going to link to the dress but I found one on ASOS which illustrates the idea. When you look at the dress consider where your eyes are drawn to.

V neck not v back

Why not link your dress?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 19/07/2023 13:19

I'm unsure if you are asking us to tell you how to flatter a larger belly because the dress you bought doesn't, or just randomly telling us how to dress to disguise a belly for some reason?

Also confused. I thought you were wanting tips. Now not sure. I have a belly and wear dresses a bit like this, not sleeveless though. Yours curve and Jolie Moi are my go to.

Hijack alert! @Mummyoflittledragon - what is the sizing link on Jolie Moi dresses? I keep looking at them and they look gorgeous. BUT I'm very tall and size 18 booby with an enormous stomach (stunning, huh?!)

Sodop · 19/07/2023 14:18

My attention is drawn to the ruffle under the bust. But, if you have a big bust, I’d probably look there. Are you hoping to hide your belly? An empire line can work well if so (ie “pulled in” under the bust then flows out and over the stomach). I would add: most people are more concerned with their own body, so probably won’t care if you have a large stomach or not (a finding I’ve made quite late in life!).

YABU to shop from Temu, who likely use slave labour to make the goods.

Whilst you are worrying about disguising your belly, the slave labourers are worrying about how to fill their children's bellies.

YouAreBeingUnbearable · 19/07/2023 15:54

What a bizarre thread.

coxesorangepippin · 19/07/2023 15:55

Does the dress look good or not??

MistyGreenAndBlue · 19/07/2023 16:17

See, I was going to suggest empire line but, to me, that dress IS empire line.
But perhaps on a shorter person that ruffle is lower on the waistline which wouldn't work. Never wear a shirred waisted dress over a large stomach.
Either way, I don't like it. Too fussy.

MiddleAgedAndExhausted · 19/07/2023 17:10

@PlatinumBrunette Jolie Moi are excellent for big boobs and tummies. I have a few in this style. I'm short so had the maxi ones shortened.

Uh oh! Thank you so much @MiddleAgedAndExhausted I can see a shopping spree coming 🫣

muddlingthrou · 19/07/2023 17:20

@MiddleAgedAndExhausted I love the shape of these dresses and see how they'd be flattering. But I can't stand polyester under my armpits - doesn't it make you super sweaty, or is that just me?!

shockthemonkey · 19/07/2023 17:41

Hey OP, I gained a belly recently and had to wear a dress that really showed it off, so to speak. But I was amongst friends and am too old to care. Just know that nobody is going to be shocked, let your belly do its own thing is what I'd advise. It felt really quite liberating.

Doggymummar · 19/07/2023 18:22

I don't understand the question ⁉️

Mirabai · 19/07/2023 18:44

That’s not a dress style to wear with a big belly if that’s what you mean. There’s were plenty of belly hiding dresses around at the moment.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 19/07/2023 18:52

Fit and flare dresses work well with larger stomachs. Also if you want to wear a dress that’s more tight fitting in the stomach area then Spanx for that area works well to hide it. Plus also a single button/breast blazer/jacket helps or even a denim jacket to hide the area.

SoberCurious2 · 19/07/2023 18:59

I have a post c section tummy 😒

I tend not to wear maxi dresses unless they're really loose fitting as I àlways find they cling to my belly. Somehow shorter dresses don't and I don't understand why!

LivelyBlake · 19/07/2023 19:35

I'm guessing you might look pregnant

I only buy their stretchy stuff (jersey print) and have several dresses. Haven’t tried the tulle overlay either. Pretty much true to size if compared to Yours curve. And I agree about them being ace for big tum and boobs. I don’t have the latter. Deffo the former lol! You need to shop around as the prices are different in different stockists. Silk Fred also stock and there is a Jolie Moi website, which has % off from time to time.

IamfeelingHopeful · 19/07/2023 22:32

I’ve been buying live unlimited for a fat tummy

Laiku · 19/07/2023 23:48

op isnt interested.

Laiku · 19/07/2023 23:49

i also love how this came under 'mumsnet shopping', well no mumsnet i am not in the market for buying. I have no idea why this post qualifies as a consumerist issue.

declutteringmymind · 19/07/2023 23:51

It's the empire line that does it.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 20/07/2023 01:32

@PlatinumBrunette I also think Jolie Moi is good for big boobs & tummy. True to size and good quality for the price.
