I’ve been invited to a village fete and told that women are expected to wear hats. What does this mean? Straw hat? Wedding type hat? I’m wearing a long white dress with black flowers. Please can I have your suggestions for suitable hays please

I'd imagine a straw hat/sun hat/fedora, but what an unusual expectation

rbe78 · 19/07/2023 14:02

That sounds odd, more like a garden party. When you say 'village fete', do you mean a public event, with hook a duck and a coconut shy and dodgy BBQ? Or is it a private party?

faustina · 19/07/2023 14:52

I've been to loads of village fetes and apart from usual sunhats or baseball caps etc I have never been to a single one where any dress code was in force, let alone a hat rule for women. Is this in the UK? I'd be tempted to think the person was playing a joke on me, like saying a party was fancy dress when it wasn't

Straw hat or white fedora with a black band (you can thread a ribbon through if you like)

Thanks - I’ll get a straw hat. It’s a private fundraising event and over the years it’s become a tradition for women to wear hats. I’m new to the area and didn’t want to get it too wrong.

whatever you do OP, don't stand next to Joice Barnaby. Grin

😂thebabe.

Strange request though, calling a private party a village fete is weird. People don’t even wear hats to weddings now. Something simple in straw that will be appropriate if everyone is else is smart or casual.

mdinbc · 20/07/2023 07:06

Straw should be just fine. Maybe source some organza ribbon in black and make a nice bow on the side or back.

SausageRoll2020 · 20/07/2023 09:17

As it's an annual event look at pictures from last year, they'll probably be plenty on social media. That should give you an idea of the type of hats normally worn

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/07/2023 09:21

If it were me, I’d deliberately not wear a hat😁

Not helpful l agree!

DaphneduM · 20/07/2023 12:53

Poor you - sounds very pretentious to me. But I agree, you can't go wrong with a nice straw hat.

AnnaMagnani · 20/07/2023 13:16

I would assume this was a comedy hat thing given a usual village fete involves casual wear, Pimms, BBQ, a plant sale and some second hand jigsaws.

It sounds like your village equivalent of best dressed scarecrow, another fete classic.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/07/2023 13:24

I'd wear the straw hat I sometimes put on in the garden if it's sunny.

Or if it was rainy it'd have to be my other gardening hatGrin

Have they had the event before? If so there might be photos on Instagram or something so you can get an idea of what is expected. I would say a nice straw boater hat would look fine though
