Box hair dye or salon colour?

10 replies

Hi

For the past couple of years I have gotten my hair coloured at a salon after many years of box dye. However I am struggling to justify the cost (approx. £150 as opposed to a £10 box dye).

Should I return to box dye or is salon colouring so much better??

I feel like I'm massively deceiving my hairdresser but I'm struggling to justify the expense when I can't really tell much different between box dye colour and salon. I'm blonde if that makes any difference.

Can anyone advise which is best to do?
Thank you

How often are you going to the hairdresser and what sort of blonde?

I have a whole head of highlights twice a year at £150 then box die a dark ash blonde myself every 6 weeks or so - my hairdresser knows about it - my roots come through too quickly for me to afford a salon visit every time I need my roots doing.

The highlights give a multi tonal undertone which you don’t get from box dyes generally but only going twice a year or so stops it being ruinously expensive.

I wouldn’t go platinum from a box but a dirty lived in ash blonde is perfectly achievable and not any more damaging in my opinion than salon dye.

I do salon dye at home…. Buy the Wella Koleston and developer from Amazon. My old hairdresser told me never to do box dyes 🙂

Could you find a cheaper salon? My salon does a cut and colour for £45

@Mmmmdanone

Omg really?! My last haircut alone was £70!
I definitely don't go to a particularly expensive salon either!!

@whothefkisalice I’m brunette and dye it my natural colour to cover grey though, in case you’re needing to lift levels etc? Also it’s block colour, I’m not dexterous enough to put foils in etc.
I started doing it during covid when I couldn’t see my own hairdresser, then moved house and lost her anyway so carried on doing it myself 😊

Having just fucked my hair up royally doing box dye stuff I 100% recommend going to a hairdresser

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy

Oh noo, this is what caused me to change to hairdresser as opposed to box dye but I did get a bit carried away!

I do live in quite a deprived area. Go to the dodgiest part of town and find a salon. Always way cheaper and also pretty good in my experience!

Its not just the cost of the salon- its the sitting there all day I cannot stand. I just feel like its a waste of my time!

I used to go to a hairdressing school sometimes. I only had cuts/blow dries, but a friend had colours all the time. The students are closely monitored, so it can take longer than a regular salon 😩, BUT at 1/10 the cost- its worth it if you have the time. Also- I had better cuts there than I had in salons- because they were meticulous in getting it right.

Some I've been to included vidal sassoon, this place in Bethnal Green â–· Joshua Galvin @ Central Academy London (cylex-uk.co.uk) plus Model For Us (toniandguy.com) You might find salons local to you need models too.
