What sort of slip do I need with this dress?

This dress has just arrived and I’m taking it on holiday next week.
It’s very sheer (even with nude underwear) - what sort of slip/ underskirt would be best?
A tight fitted one or a looser one; knee length or maxi; nude or white? The back is quite low so I think a skirt would be better than a dress.

I’m a bit pushed for time before we go away for shopping/ ordering different options, so hoping you can help me narrow it down 🤞🏻

Thank you!

Definitely nude not white. The thing with a skirt though, is that I think it will be noticeable even in nude, the dress is so see through, you’d see where it sits at the waist. I’m not sure what the answer is, hopefully someone else will have ideas!

I’d go nude or white, and a dress rather than a skirt - if you do a skirt you’ll be able to see the waist of the skirt clearly through the dress and it would look a bit odd.
Hopefully you can find one with long extendable straps to bring the back down enough. Or I’d even suggest sewing it inside the dress like lining? That way you could cut off the straps and just attach at the top line of the dress.
Below knee length probably fine?

YY to chopping off the straps and sewing a slip inside the dress! This is a fab idea and one I’ll be using in future!

maybe something like this? It’s cotton so might be cooler as a slip than something more clingy? Everyone says to size up a lot in the reviews though.

I would return it and get something else.

StressyMcStressFace · 12/07/2023 12:19

Surely that IS the slip? 🤔 (sorry - couldn't help it 🙈)

I migrated to wearing 99% dresses last year so I have discovered the key is a slip of the right colour and length (especially if the dress is on the sheer side).

Most affordable shop with lots of different colours and lengths? Prize goes to the M&S Cool Comfort ones.

  • They have adjustable straps. So you have some variability for how low cut your dress is.
  • You can wear them either way, eg one side is a simple V shape and the other side has a straight lace edging.
  • OK in hot weather. I wore them under sheer silk dresses last summer during the heatwave perfectly fine.
  • Re length. My personal preference is, the sheerer the fabric the closer I like to match my slip length to the dress. But the slip needs to be a bit shorter so it doesn't poke out when you move or sit.
  • Re colour. You could either match your skin colour or go for white, it depends on the cut of the dress. Try both.

If you can get to a large M&S lingerie section to try lots of them on, even it's just to narrow down which dress sizes/length/ colours work better, then you could order online for the perfect one.

I'd wear a white waist slip. It does not matter if that shows, even if much shorter. I always avoid anything that is so called nude, why give the impression of nothing underneath?

FFSCarrieBradshaw · 12/07/2023 12:50

Hmm, that is very sheer! Is it meant as a beach cover-up over a bikini rather than a regular dress?

Not sure you want to be faffing about with slips if you're somewhere hot.

I think I'd just use in it the day to throw over your swimwear.

hellswelshy · 12/07/2023 13:05

Could you just wear nude underwear op, as in large nude short type knickers and bra so you feel less exposed? That way it's less faff finding a slip to fit?

Fiddledeedeeee · 12/07/2023 13:11

This is the dress, it’s def meant to be a proper dress rather than beach wear.
Dress
In real life it’s a lot nicer than the photo I posted but you’re all right, it’s very sheer!!

I like the idea of sewing a slip inside it, as a lining. I think I’ll try a trip to a big M&S as suggested, once the kids are in bed and see what looks best underneath, then I’ll see if my mum can have a go at that for me. Thank you all.

It looks so so much more sheer in your pic op, than on the website! Can’t believe it’s being advertised as a wedding dress and people here understandably thinking it was a beach cover up! I’d be upset if I’d ordered that as my wedding dress (does look nice on you as a holiday dress though)

ACurlyWurlyTail · 12/07/2023 14:06

I have a similar dress, i bought a skirt slip and full lenght one. in the end i wore it without the slip and just wore nude underwear, where we were on holiday was very hot and i was more covered up than most. if the nude matches your skintone it will be less noticable especially abroad, and if its for night time wear the lighting makes a difference. That said both the skirt slip and dress version worked. I had one like the above M&S one with adjustable straps
Have also worn it with the skirt slip pulled up and tucked under my bra, covers the whole waist to thigh section

Fiddledeedeeee · 26/07/2023 06:29

Little update in case it helps anyone else… I went for a nude knee- length underskirt from M&S (not a fitted one) and it worked perfectly. No hint of anything showing 👌🏻
