Winter coat - warm but cheap because my size and shape are changing, ha!

I've been looking at coats and the last one I properly bought was a £200 wool long Alexon down to £30 13 years ago. It was warm, calf-length and allowed me to layer up. Used it with an umbrella. But it now has really seen better days I am also no longer a size 6. And I am not a fan of umbrellas because I am carrying kids and kids' stuff. I am now several sizes up with what feels like ginormous boobs (also how my DD 7 describes them), thanks to extended bf of two monsters for 7 years. I have a tummy that shape-shifts because of cyst stuff + exercise + change in jobs etc. My coat that fits is a spring one and I need a winter coat. Bought one in a charity shop about 4 years ago when we moved to wetter climes, Regatta £6 which was warm 😊but short 😔, but it's now both worn and small for the aforementioned parts of me. 😅So I'm looking at these wonderful sales, the heights of which I missed (i.e. if a coat was 7.50, I'd have bought it without thinking that much). My choices are down to £50-£100 for a long-line Regatta or a Superdry or just much much cheaper £9-£20 for Asos or Vero Moda (I like the VM one actually) or whoever Noisy May is. Scads of fast fashion brands at lower prices. OR just wait for the charity shops and maybe get a brand on a bargain. We live in Wales, it's often wet, I don't drive and two kids in different schools. If you've read my decision paralysis thus far, thanks for any input!

All I've got from this is...

You need a coat
You live in a wet place
You want a winter coat
You want it to be warm and not short.
You want it to be a bargain.

Have you tried next clearance?

TwoLittleDucks22 · 08/07/2023 00:13

What size are you? Not a six isn't a size. Grin

CC4712 · 08/07/2023 00:14

You haven't said what your current size is, colour preference, style, price range etc is-so its a bit hard to advise.

I used to like coats from desigual, but have also had cheaper ones from asda or M&S.

Haha, thanks, @CC4712. I edited out my size actually. I'm a 14 and wear some 16s and some 12s. My spring coat is a 16. But why would the size affect where I look for a coat? Desigual last, don't they? I have a couple of items that have lasted well. Are the coats warm and functional?

@TwoLittleDucks22 I haven't looked in Next Clearance. Good shout, thanks!

I have looked so far in Secret Sales, Debenhams, Studio and Google.

Because if you were plus sized, then clearly we would be looking in different shops to those that mainly cater for smaller or petite sizes!

HopelessEstateAgents · 08/07/2023 00:25

Friday night wine OP?

Krida · 08/07/2023 00:35

@HopelessEstateAgents thanks. I don't drink. Do I actually sound like that?

@CC4712 thanks for explaining; I would have mentioned if I wanted a specific feature. This depends entirely on the retailer, IME. 14-16 shows up on some plus size pages but is also usually to be found on the usual pages.

Haha, oh dear, not sure these answers are going to help me but serves me right for deciding to ask on MN for my shopping problems. Some pretty honest reviews on here though so I will stick to searching.

Because if you want a sale bargain, not all sizes will be left everywhere.

Do you want another wool coat?

Or something like a Parka? Tresspass have many in their sale. The style I've linked is one DM has had for a couple of winters and is excellent.

Krida · 08/07/2023 13:42

Brilliant idea. Love that coat.

I'm looking more for a parka this time as it is a lot wetter where we now live

Do Cotton Traders last somewhat?

Did you try Vinted? I got an amazing ski jacket off there for virtually nothing and good as new.

Stoic123 · 08/07/2023 14:16

Second vote for vinted or eBay if size changeable. Loads of Regatta longline on eBay that's new with tags. Just sell on if it doesn't suit.

NightOwlNotEarlyBird · 09/07/2023 11:34

I bought one from Craghoppers in the sale last year which fits your descriptions. It's long, waterproof, has a hood, lightweight but warm (windproof and heat retention). I wore it all winter and layered up when it got really cold, kept me warm and dry. If you can get to a store, try on different styles in person.
