i avoid polyester shirts
linens need an iron
so tend to go to viscose or cotton
but i am searching for a dress and am worried how polyester dress will be?
are they as hot and sweaty as shirts?

Avoid. They start to smell really quickly.

Wash well though but smell lingers.

I was following a woman on a tour of a school wearing an obviously polyester suit and she smiled really badly!

I would only get a polyester dress if it was sleeveless (although I get the dreaded underboob sweat as well these days), as PP says they can really start to smell when it gets warm.

CharlotteSometimes1 · 03/07/2023 10:20

Yes, you’ll be hot and sweaty.

APurpleSquirrel · 03/07/2023 10:53

Avoid!

GettingStuffed · 03/07/2023 12:18

I don't get this hate for polyester, I don't feel any better in it than in cotton or viscose.

Notcontent · 03/07/2023 12:24

Avoid - they look cheap and get sweaty.

Diddykong · 03/07/2023 12:25

They smell so bad. I have colleagues who wear them. Mornings they look great, by the afternoon you can smell them coming even after lots of 'over up' deodorant and perfume sprays

Willmafrockfit · 03/07/2023 15:20

thanks very much,
such as shame to read as there are so many!

As for polyester still smelling after being washed the secret is to wash on a low temperature 30° is best and absolutely no hotter than 40°. This is because washing at a higher temperature effectively fixes the smells into the fabric rather than eliminating as you might expect.

Deathraystare · 04/07/2023 17:29

My loathe is Viscose. It does to me what polyester does to others! A real sweat Tsunami!!!!

I've actually found the opposite as I usually wash on 30/40 and my partners thermals sometimes still stink. 60deg and an extra rinse does it though.

LoobyDop · 04/07/2023 18:21

Cold and sweaty, I find. The worst of both worlds.

NatashaDancing · 05/07/2023 04:50

Well, many posters seem not to mind polyester. There's a current thread full of suggestions for evening dresses, the vast majority of which are polyester. Wedding guest threads are also often full of polyester dresses.

I don't know about the problems mentioned in this thread. My objection to polyester dresses is that they generally look cheap - especially if they're trying to copy glamorous black tie/ red carpet type dresses.

EveSix · 05/07/2023 04:54

Sweaty.
Smelly.
Look like polyester.

Oh!

This sounds really snobby of me but I find polyester dresses always look cheap. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places or maybe they just look cheap on me!

NatashaDancing · 06/07/2023 09:38

You sometimes see even upmarket brands using it but generally it's cheaper brands. The worst are polyester dresses trying to copy glamorous dresses in styles which would be fine in silk or velvet or good quality cotton lawn or poplin. It doesn't work.

ManilaBlanks · 06/07/2023 14:21

It's not true that 40c fixes scents into fabric quite the opposite. What a hot wash does though is fix things like blood in your knickers or some stains.
Polyester is horribly smelly.

ManilaBlanks · 06/07/2023 14:22

Try bamboo, I love it. Nice dresses at Thought Clothing or Seasalt. They both do plain clothes if you're not keen on their prints.

ManilaBlanks · 06/07/2023 14:22

Also Cos and Toast, Boden, Hush... the usual loves of MN!

Superdupes · 06/07/2023 14:28

I wouldn't get a polyester dress but I bought a cheap polyester long skirt and it is fantastic for taking on holiday as you can just screw it up in a bag and it still looks perfect after.
