I had my hair highlighted a few days ago.
I'm naturally dark haired
She said I've put a warm toner on rather than ashy so it's brighter blonde
I just hate how gingery it is
Anything I can do ?

Blue shampoo to help get rid of the red. I have blonde highlights but am naturally quite chestnut type color. Helps to make my blonde brighter and get rid of the warm tones

nicerislands · 02/07/2023 12:37

Do you think it would of been better if she had used a ash toner ?

continentallentil · 02/07/2023 12:40

go back and ask her to sort it

although it doesn’t look all that bad

nicerislands · 02/07/2023 14:59

She said that it was how it should be with a warm toner
Not sure why she chose a warm toner tho

I think it looks gorgeous?
There must have been a reason she used a warm toner / do you have warm features?
When I have highlights and if they use an ash toner, I look like I’ve been dug up for a few weeks until it washes out as my features are so warm.
I’ve never understood the obsession with lighter has to mean ash - it doesn’t suit everyone.

escript · 02/07/2023 16:34

It looks like a nice colour, but warmer towards the roots.

tobi21 · 02/07/2023 16:38

purple shampoo every other wash will help tone, but be careful how long you leave it on for as lightened/bleached hair is more porous, and can soak up more colour and will tinge purple if left on too long

another option would be to just buy a toner and apply on top but I'd be wary about using box ones after having it done professionally, also agree with PP that it looks gorgeous already

veryfluffyfluff · 02/07/2023 16:40

Not helpful but I really like that

FloofCloud · 02/07/2023 16:44

Purple shampoo helps with brassy locks. I think it looks nice though too

PinkIcedCream · 02/07/2023 16:50

Did she ask what sort of Tone you wanted your highlights to be, during the consultation stage? (warm/cool?)

Were you wearing warm colours in clothing and Gold coloured jewellery? Maybe she thinks you suit warmer tones?

If you left it up to her, that's on you. Hairdressers aren't mind readers.
You need to be very clear about what you like and don't like during the initial consultation.

A blue shampoo will help balance the orange based tones.

goldfootball · 02/07/2023 16:52

I had this exact problem last week and I contacted the stylist and asked her to tone it down. She was absolutely fine about it and now we know for next time to go beige over warm toner!

omgsally · 02/07/2023 16:54

Blue shampoo on this will make it darker. Purple shampoo will knock out the brassiness but your hair doesn't look a light enough blonde for it to make much difference really.

This is true.

If you want brighter, whiter, creamy highlights then you need more and either an ashy toner or no toner next time you go.

Wait a while before you go again. If you're trying to go blonde from dark, it will take a while but totally doable.

You basically need your highlights whitey/blonde for purple shampoo to work its magic.

nicerislands · 03/07/2023 07:26

Well I used to have more ashy highlights and after getting them for two years my hair wasn't in the best condition so I went dark for 8 months and now adding back in highlights.
I said I wanted ash toner but she said because I wanted brighter highlights the warm toner would achieve that where the ash toner would make my hair duller

I used the blondifier cool shampoo by L'Oréal last night and think it's helped a little

Fanola

If it's too orange, use the blue one. If it's too yellow use the purple one. It's the best on the market and used by salons

nicerislands · 03/07/2023 09:02

Oh Thankyou I've never heard of that brand before
I will take a look now Thankyou

It's good, but it stains skin a bit. Would recommend gloves

Kaiserchief · 03/07/2023 09:08

Purple shampoo and conditioner is amazing

It looks a beautiful colour in that photograph.

escript · 03/07/2023 12:07

It looks even now.

SparklingMarkling · 03/07/2023 12:09

You need Fanola off Amazon.

omgsally · 03/07/2023 13:34

Yep, Fanola is the best there is. Stinks and you must wear gloves cos it's so heavily pigmented but it works like nothing else. Cool, ashy blonde that isn't dull is soooo hard to achieve. Not many hairdressers can do it. Colour is much better in your 2nd pic.
