Better quality clothes and how to look elegant with big boobs?

How do you look elegant with ginormous norks?

Im a size 12-14 (14 on any day I need to look 'nice') I have FF boobs and honestly I never feel elegant, I'm 5ft 8 have a stump for a body big boobs and longish legs so I should be able to look like I've not just got out of a hessian sack but my chest seems to prevent me from ever looking elegant.

Where can I find clothes that are a better quality so hopefully last longer and are cut better and how do I dress more elegantly on my top half?

Yes, I get fitted at bravissimo so no issues there. It's just the size of them!

Have you considered saving some money and putting it aside then going to the John Lewis Personal Shopper experience? I believe the experience is free, they’ll help you with brands you probably haven’t considered/looked at, shapes and styles that suit your body?

im very similar size, I’m 32 (size 14 on a good, 16 on a realistic day, G boobs, 5,7) and am 9 months post partum. Before I go back to work I’m going to go and have a spree for a capsule work wardrobe and capsule home wardrobe via their service.

I wear a lot of midi dresses at the moment (yes the dreaded midi floral dress which is apparently out of style, yet is everywhere in the shops, or I where linen tapered trousers, or wide leg with a variety of tops and occasionally a blazer). I’ve been loving Nobody’s Child for dresses, well sourced, well made, lovely material dresses tops and skirts though it’s usually £60 a pop at least for their dresses.

everything I read seems to be to buy good quality cotton/linen as opposed to blend, neutral colours (but neutral can be a bit boring can’t it). And to make an effort with hair, shoes and accessories to elevate it. Easier said than done isn’t it!

Jazzyjezzabelle · 01/07/2023 07:56

Im similar, and I Personally find a good minimising bra works wonders. It just makes everything more in proportion and sleeker. The Marks and Sparks mimimising bras are really good.

I don’t find it’s about the clothes, it’s about the right underwear.

Cinnamonandcoal · 01/07/2023 09:27

Compare how you look to YOU not whatever model is wearing the outfit on the website.

Otherwise, shirt dresses, midi dresses, trousers that show off your long legs. Brands that personally work for me: Whistles, Massimo Dutti, All Saints, Brora, Hobbs, some of Zara.

Nothing sack-like from Cos. Nothing super skin tight.

Get things a little bigger and then get them adjusted where necessary so they fit better.

I'm shorter than you with bigger boobs so I think your figure sounds totally fine to dress!

wutheringkites · 01/07/2023 09:31

@Cinnamonandcoal

Where you do buy shirt dresses that fit? Or do you buy bigger and get them adjusted?

I'm a size 12, bra size 32GG and I've never found a shirt dress that fits me at my bust and my waist.

DustyLee123 · 01/07/2023 09:33

I find anything not fitted just hangs from the boobs and makes me look bigger, like shirts

Seaweasel · 01/07/2023 09:41

Second the m&s minimiser bra. They are terrific and always make clothes look better on me. I agree that it is much harder to look elegant with big boobs - there's always an element of scaffolding that negates thin straps and sheer materials and lower necklines.

WildFlowerBees · 01/07/2023 09:46

I have fairly broad shoulders so I look square on top with my big boobs, I can wear anything that ties at the waist as my body is so stumpy I look like miss Trunchbull. I am so over trying to look neat and tidy! I prefer trousers I have never found a dress I look good in I just can't seem to get it together.

I am in court (as a witness) next month and I want to look out together, I know it shouldn't matter what I wear etc but to me it does, I like feeling neat and tidy. I mainly wear wide leg trousers to counteract my top half but I can't find anything that looks nice up top.

Thanks for the clothing company suggestions, I do like Me & Em trousers but I'm not certain they're worth the price.

I had a personal shopper in JL in London a few years ago and she couldn't be less bothered she was a young willowy lady with no interest in me at all I came out feeling bloody awful about myself so I'm reluctant to repeat the process.

Can anyone recommend a minimiser bra? Looked at the usual places but they don't do FF just F to G.

Can't wear anything tied at the wait not can. Bloody autocorrect.

Ffs! Waist. I need to proof read or get smaller fingers. Sorry!

Personally I'd avoid shirt dresses like the plague. Too many places that they don't fit.

I don't think a 12-14 with FF is ginormous (speaking as a size 14 G) so is it that you associate 'elegant' with 'size 8 with v small boobs'

Either anything with a v neck, or counterintuitively something massively oversized so it highlights that you are actually a size 12 underneath.

MakeupTable · 01/07/2023 10:21

What about the tunic style dresses from Hobbs?

The Lucille tunic dress might work.

TheOGCCL · 01/07/2023 10:22

Totally relate to this. I’m a size 8-10 but my FF boobs always prevent me from feeling truly elegant. I don’t necessarily think it’s about what societal ideals have told me. Societal ideals would actually say I have a covetable figure. Things just hang better on a smaller bust. Large boobs so easily tip you into a sort of matronly shelf look where your entire top half is boob flesh. They’re heavy too, where some women can’t wait to take their bra off, I wear one pretty much 24/7.

My main tricks are thin layers. In colder weather I actually like to wear high neck tops or even roll necks (you just need to find ones that don’t cling but aren’t baggy either) which is clearly not recommended for big busts, but then I break up the flesh shelf with a second layer of some sort, usually a cardigan or a blazer. I’d never expect to do up the second layer. Also a necklace at the décolletage to distract the eye upwards. In warmer weather I do the same but it would be a thin vest or T-shirt and an open shirt. Vertical lines on the shirt are flattering.

These days with everything ludicrously oversized I can actually do shirts up. I think this can look ok as long as you roll the sleeves up and do some kind of tuck at the waist. Showing off a slimmer, more delicate part of the body helps get away from a square, boxy, lumpy shape.

I don’t wear dresses as for some reason they make me feel even more matronly but imo a mid rise is best on trousers, certainly nothing too high that increases the risk everything above your waist is bust. You want some space between the top of your trousers and the start of your bust.

Despite feeling a bit passé I’m still working indoor/lightweight scarves, they are a great way to cover up a large bust.

This video gives some hints and tips, you might not necessarily like the clothes but the shapes make a big difference

Me&EM trousers are lovely but not worth the price as the stitches go and the fabric is not very good...

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/07/2023 10:30

I'm a g cup and I've found draped neckline tops look elegant on me, as do halter necks, although they can be tricky to find the right bra to go under them.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/07/2023 10:31

And silk always looks elegant, imo.

Notthefoggiest · 01/07/2023 10:31

Have you tried the pepper berry clothes from Bravissimo?

Terryer · 01/07/2023 10:35

The top is really drapy with plenty of room so covers boobs without looking matronly

Terryer · 01/07/2023 10:36

I also had an absolutely awful experience in JL, in fact I ended up walking out.
