Wtf to buy for holiday?

Hi all,

Fashion-challenged here, and haven't been on a beach holiday since 2018. I'm going to Greece in August and haven't a clue what to buy/pack. Going for 10 nights, plan to wash when there, so was thinking 4 day dresses, a couple of bikinis, 4 dresses for the evening, few pairs of shorts/skirts for the day with vest tops and some kaftans. If I remember correctly from the last holiday I mainly lounged in bikini/kaftan through the day if staying on the complex, then just got changed for the evening. Do you have any must-buys for holidays you can share? I'm so clueless😂

I came on SAB to ask for recommendations but so many threads unanswered?
Have you tried vinted? I got a fab navy and white dress from Lakeland leather it's so easy to wear. What's your budget? So amount available say for each dress?

I've ordered some wide leg white trousers and some lightweight wide leg cullots in a denim blue. I'm doing navy and white capsule. Have gold sandals and laceless shoes for day. Plus some minimus trainers for walking. Possibly Crocs flip flops for the beach?

I'm going to Greece in September. Spain this week.

I got these shorts with top to match from weird fish. There's a sale on now plus other dissy. They do blue light card discount on full price.

What colour scheme are you going for? Navy goes with allsorts.

So if you lounge around in a kaftan most of the day why bring four day dresses plus shorts and tops?
I'd bring two or three kaftans, which in Greece you can wear out and about too, two pairs of shorts, three or four tops, a couple dresses for evening if you plan on going 'out out'. Two pairs of sandals and trainers/plimsolls for walking. A wrap or something if it gets chilly at night and on the plane. Two/three bathing suits and undies and done! I wouldn't need to wash anything if I brought all that.

When I’m on holiday I literally wear bikinis every day with some sort of kaftan / light dress as a cover up. Then evening type dresses for dinner. Some flip flops and sandals and heels if you wear them.

I suppose it depends how sweaty you get? Sounds a good amount though.

I'm off to Next today. There's a few clothes shops close by. I need a nude strapless bra too 🤞 plus maybe a tankini? Or a new swimming costume. I can make do if not. I fly Tuesday.

What you've got sounds like a lot of dresses to me. I would take something like:
3 bikinis
2 day dresses that can be dressed up for evening
1 slightly more eveningy dress
3 shorts
1 skirt
Loads of vest tops and t-shirts including some strappy vests that look nice in evening.
Something for covering up like a linen shirt

Greece in August is crazy hot so I would expect to want to mainly be in the least clothing possible!

Chub rub shorts if you have thighs that touch!

IncognitoMam · 09/07/2023 18:05

I've been to the shops today. Matalan had some nice stuff. Got some sandals in tkmaxx. Next some jewellery and picked up floaty trousers from m&s. I still need to try those on as went to the pub to meet friends.

I felt like budget pretty woman with all my bags 😂

AuntieDolly · 09/07/2023 18:21

I was going to suggest matalan - I got some nice holiday stuff there. Wide leg pants, cropped white jeans, cheesecloth blouses. Also next and Sainsbury's. I tend to mix and match tops and bottoms rather than dresses and always overpack, especially if you spend most of the day on the beach

IncognitoMam · 09/07/2023 18:45

I got these today. They're amazing and such a good price. Look more expensive.

I've just got back from a week in Spain and it was hot! Too hot really to do anything that didn't involve being close to a pool for most of the week so during the day I wore bikini/swimsuit and a kaftan or shirt when I was going for lunch or to get drinks! Had a pair of shorts and a couple of vests for when we went to the beach but really didn't need much more
Also ended up wearing the same dress 3 evenings out of the 6 and the rest of the evenings a pair of shorts and vest again!
Took far too many clothes could have done with half of what I took!

IncognitoMam · 09/07/2023 18:52

@swedex yes I've heard it's really hot. I'm not taking masses. Floaty clothes and strappy tops.

Who is wearing full length trousers of any kind in Greece in August? It’s as hot as an oven so think cool as possible - swimwear and sleeveless floaty dresses - the cheaper shops like New Look and H&M do lots in different styles in thin viscose which is nice and cool. Flat sandals and maybe a few cotton cover ups or sarongs.

Don't think OP mentioned full length trousers? I just posted mine as was so pleased with the quality.

Greece is ridiculously hot. I lounge around by pool/beach in bikini/swimsuit but if going somewhere on the way to there eg a shop I wear a short skirt/Jean shorts/other shorts and a top.

Sightseeing and going out you need tops and skirts or dresses but things which are cool, preferably cotton or linen or maybe silk.

I’ve seen nice bandeau tops in sainsburys plus skirts and shorts, similar in Tesco’s, H&M have lots too.

I almost always bring my holiday clothes you can buy in resorts - so floaty cool dresses, pareos, sarongs. And some places have lovely dresses etc you can buy - I got a long red checked daisy dress in Crete years ago!

I would ditch at least half the dresses.
