September wedding so I shop now ?

timefornewme2023 · 12/06/2023 12:09

Attending a family wedding in September and wasn't in a rush to start looking for an outfit but have had a sudden panic that all the stuff for summer weddings will be gone if I wait too long.
What do you think ?

Do I need to get on with it ?

If so where would be on your list of shops ?

I love Me+Em but happy not to spend that much if I can avoid!

Thanks .

To me September is an early Autumn wedding - so I’d be looking for something transitional in the sales: so maybe a suit in lighter materials or a sleeveless dress in wool or tweed. Alternatively (if feeling flush) I’d wait for the new season Autumn 2023 stuff to arrive over Summer - pay full price but get the best choice.

For sales - both Matches and Net-a-Porter have huge sales on at the moment. And of course there’s always The Outnet.

Thanks @MuddlerInLaw that's helpful despite my typo in the title - I meant to ask DO I shop now ?
I really hadn't considered going more Autumnal I am going to have a think about that. We are going to be able to be indoors in one venue for the whole day so I don't need to worry about feeling cold but maybe the flowers etc will be a bit autumnal and that may influence me.

Me and Em have great sales, I would definitely wait for that. If you can't find anything then you can always wait for the AW collection. I personally wouldn't buy now, 2 weeks from the sales starting!

MaxMara has new season dresses available now that might be perfect for ‘not outside’ September weddings.

I always plan outfits stupidly in advance (we are talking months!) due to my size and MH. I generally have an idea in my head (including accessories) from things I may have already seen on internet/media/shops etc and almost have a mood type board thing going on gathering ideas. If I find something particular I’ll keep an eye to see if I can get cheaper or similar on Vinted and eBay. I don’t have a big budget but often have got lovely dresses from Monsoon, ChiChi for example BNWT from eBay.

I have a wedding in September and bought my dress two weeks ago. It’s a royal blue on the knee dress made of crepe with an underskirt with long cuffed sleeves and ties at the side of the waist. Will be wearing black heels and I already have a tweed black and white jacket, a Chanel style though not a genuine one, it’s an LK Bennett one and had it for years. Will be taking along a black clutch bag.

I always look way in advance for anything that’s a big event like a wedding as I rarely see things I like.

Thanks all @LaCerbiatta this has reassured me that maybe this is a great time to be wedding outfit shopping as I can see what goes in the sales but also know I nave time do wait for AW stock if needs be.

I really want to look fabulous if possible as it's a close family wedding and my DC are in the wedding party.
Not sure I have a Maxmara budget but am keeping my eyes open at places I wouldn't normally shop as it's such a special occasion.

Check to see when the summer sales begin, usually beginning of July I've found (having gone shopping in early August and it's all autumn clothes!)

Nutterjacks · 13/06/2023 18:36

Have you thought about renting? There are many sites to choose from and you can find something nice which would normally cost a fortune to buy.

This site has a great selection:

This might be helpful if you decide to hire instead of buying:

Is it early September- summery weather or late September- more autumn weather?

This was my worry but others are saying autumnal vibes might be the way to go . Let's hope I can snag a bargain .

@MuddlerInLaw I wouldn't say any of those dresses are particularly nice for a wedding.

OP, I've been to several weddings in September over the years and every single one has been hot weather - late 20's. Including the last week of September. I also have another wedding this year in September and will probably get a summer dress and an autumn dress so I have both scenarios covered.

MuddlerInLaw · 13/06/2023 19:33

@lankyhanky - I guess we’re all free to like what we like!

keyboardkat · 13/06/2023 19:40

I'd go with a Summery style and fabric I like and know works for me, in slightly more muted colours, and go for longer sleeve version, or as near as possible.

I can't imagine tweed or wool or other heavy fabric when the wedding is indoors anyway. It's not the North Pole!

Definitely hoping for nice weather but it's the third week so it could be chilly . I am thinking I might go for summer colours although I suit strong colours more than pastel. It's a small wedding and I will feature in wedding party photos so may need to get a bit of steer from the bride.
I am getting really excited now, trying not to out myself at all but it's my Dsis and we are no spring chickens but it's her first wedding and I am so happy for her !

Thanks @Nutterjacks I did loosely start thinking about that option as so many stores are offering it too .
Of course I always start thinking I might find something fabulous enough that I will want to have the option to pull it out of wardrobe again in the future !

I would work on finding something summery that you could pop a jacket on top of for warmth if needed as weather is usually lovely in September and breaks early/mid October (well it does in the south where I live)
But maybe I'm not the best person to advise, I had a smart wedding reception to go to following marriage abroad recently and I only bought the dress and shoes the weekend before. However in my defence, I knew what the weather was going to be like and there wasn't time to change my mind between buying and wearing. It's also got to do a July wedding as well.

Matildahoney · 13/06/2023 20:48

If you're part of the weddings party I'd definitely look now.
I have a wedding early Sept and (all being well) will be 6 months pregnant! I'm so torn as to how long to wait, no idea how big I'll be! It's so difficult, and I'll have to be in pics as it's DPs brothers wedding! I'm looking just to get ideas, but probably not going to buy until end of July.

Gosh yes pregnancy is definitely an extra challenge!
Are you looking at maternity ranges with all the room you need built in ?

Matildahoney · 14/06/2023 23:35

@timefornewme2023 yes and no, lots of sites have dresses that call themselves bump friendly. I can't decide whether I want fitted or floaty, fitted I'd go maternity, but floaty I could hopefully just get away with a normal size, my other trouble is I'm 5"2 and petite maternity doesn't really seem to be a thing!
