Indigo powder as hair dye alone?

Does it do anything on its own without henna? What colour will it leave white hair?

From what I understand, if you want to cover white hair, you need to use the indigo with or after henna, either in a one-step (henna and indigo applied together) or two-step (henna applied, rinsed out, then indigo applied) process. The one-step process is obviously more straightforward but I think won't give as dark a brown/black as the two-step.

If you just wanted to darken already brown hair, you could apply it on its own. This is just my understanding having read around the subject, I don't use indigo myself yet, just henna.
