Summer party dress but not wedding!

FancyFanny · 03/06/2023 18:36

I'm going to a celebration party next week- it's an evening drinks party in a local club function room, disco, etc.

Been told to come 'glam' but don't want to look over dressed. I want a dress, but everything summery seems to be more day-time and every dress I've tried so far makes me feel like a wedding guest rather than a party-goer.

Suggestions please- for reference I'm 50, size 12. 5'7"- so fairly tall and reasonably slim. Have a varicose vein on inside of knee so preferably below the knee length.

@CaveMum do you actively dislike contemporary styles? I’m older than the OP - and I don’t know anyone of my own age who wears the sort of dress you’ve linked. I might actually cry if anyone tried to make me wear any of the Jolie Moi stock.

(Not meaning to offend, just surprised.)

CaveMum · 04/06/2023 15:51

@CountryCousin thats nice for you. People are allowed to have different tastes you know. I would cry if anyone tried to make me wear some of the stuff already linked to on this page, but the difference between me and you is that I choose not to single anyone out and disparage their perfectly valid opinion.

CountryCousin · 04/06/2023 16:19

No one is being singled out - it’s an anonymous forum! How does discussion work if everyone claims to like the same things?

CountryCousin · 04/06/2023 16:21

And seemingly millions of people on MN have disparaged my tastes! Grin Anonymously. It’s not as if they’re buttonholing me in the street.

Hmm, we all have different tastes, but I'm afraid the styles you've linked to are the exact 'going to a wedding' sort of dresses I'm trying to avoid.

But they’d all be very acceptable ‘wedding guest’ dresses, surely, @Mirabai - when what the OP wants is something ‘glam’ for a party in a local club/disco context.

It’s admittedly hard to narrow down infinite options, though! Tbh this vest and skirt from Zara is probably more the sort of thing I’d consider for Summer. Or possibly the Zara braided dress, particularly if outside. The others are from Massimo Dutti.

I've been pleasantly surprised by a lot of Monsoon stuff. How about this with glam accessories:

Mirabai · 05/06/2023 14:16

Dress code is “glam”. I’d wear any of those. I’d wear the green one for daytime.

ZiaMcnab · 05/06/2023 14:48

This one from Nobody's Child might fit the bill; easily glammed up with gold heels & accessories, but you could also wear it to less glam events with trainers/ flats and much less jewellery. I'm a little bit younger than you (early 40s), slightly taller (5'9") and a bit bigger (size 14-16) and I so very nearly bought it, but have no occasion for it atm and think it's probably a bit much for work, unfortunately!

Op have you considered a satin slip skirt, it’s much more versatile in terms of wearing again.

I got this one from ghost. I got the dark green and It’s gorgeous in real life but thr other colours are lovely . You can also get a full dress version.

but uou can also get some gorgeous camis to wear with it. Two seperates will get much more use.

@Laureltime That's a good idea!

Well, the Green Satin Oliver bones dress arrived and it's going straight back! Far from being too clingy- it's much too loose and it just hangs on me- maybe I needed a 10! I'm not going to bother though!

Op you can also buy them much cheaper, I doubt you can tell the difference in real life to be honest. Just depends on what colour you want.

TKMaxx has some Adrannia Papelland Ghost dresses which may be suitable but I like this one
