What is your most favourite item in your wardrobe?

I bought a John Rocha top from Debenhams about 10 years ago and love it. It hangs beautifully and has taken me through pregnancies and beyond and still I feel good in it. When it started to fall apart I found another on Ebay! Exactly the same. That too is now falling apart and I can't find another. I wondered if anyone else has an item of clothing that has been worn and loved to pieces or what is your most loved item in your wardrobe.

I have a black sundress that I think was from Muji about 20 years ago. I wear it every summer and I still love it. It is very similar to the dress the Normal People actress wore in the TV adaptation. It is still in decent nick so I hope it can keep going another 20 years.

I have a cross-body canvass bag I bought about 20 years ago, I've had to do quite a bit of visible mending on it and I love it.

Also some linen tunics, I have a few of those, very cheap but so neat and simple.

It's ridiculous, but I have some jean capri/crops that are so old, they are falling apart, and that style is not 'in' anymore.

I know wearing a straight or wider capri marks me as middle age frump, but they are practical, soft, and fit nice, so I will wear them a while yet.

shorts are too short for sitting on public chairs, car seats, and trousers are too long. Just the right skirt will do, but not for bike riding or gardening, so my old capris come out of the closet in May.

A black lace dress with long sleeves that is dressy for going out in. It has a full skirt and with high black shoes and my hair up even I feel quite glamorous in it. I rarely wear make up but when I wear this dress I want to plus I have some nice diamond jewelry I wear with it.

It's heartwarming to hear about these items and why people love them. There seems to be a timelessness to these things. You know they look great and suit you and that is a confidence boost and comfort.

I like the story of the much-mended bag too! I'm inspired to look for a dressmaker to make a pattern from my old top and see if they can recreate it in a dozen different colours and materials. I have trouble sewing on a button myself!

A v necked winter vest made wool and alpaca. Neutral colour. I absolutely love it!
I wear over dresses and with boots.

A white broderie summer top from Bravissimo, in a rarity for Bravissimo it's actually cotton. I team it with short denim shorts. It's lovely as it's actually cool in hot weather. I have it in black as well

Even though I get a bit sick of it by March, my winter coat.

From Next when the quality was better and the zips metal not plastic. Maybe about seven years ago.

Mid way between smart and casual. Furry lining. Warm. Padded without making me look big. Just fits.

I always think how ridiculous it is that there are some items I buy that I do not get the wear out of (bad choices basically) and others I wear to death even though I could afford to replace. One offsets the other I guess.

In winter it's a Harris Tweed overcoat.

In summer it's some Karate trousers that I bought in the 80s for a self defence class and that I've worn pretty much every summer since. They're in a heavy cotton canvas and hang beautifully (which I realise wasn't the main intention but hey). Now that I'm a bit more competent in sewing I'm planning to trace them and make some more, although it'll probably be next summer before they're ready.

A long, camel, oversized wool belted wrap coat I bought in Sweden several years ago.

I just love it. Its beautiful, soft, comfortable, warm, cosy and classic, with big pockets.

I feel ridiculously happy when I wear it.

A silver grey merino jumper with a pleat back from Monsoon. Its’s very fine knit and the perfect colour and shape for me. It’s about 10 years old and I was living in fear of it falling apart.
So far I’ve bought 4 more from Vinted, the latest brand new with tags.

SwedishEdith · 03/06/2023 11:31

A very dark blue so looks black heavy cotton knitted jumper in a rib design with a stand up neck. Ideally, it'd be about a half size bigger. It's about 10 years old Ines de la Fressange Uniqlo one I got in the sale. Like a fisherman's jumper. I pretty much wear it every day in winter and am dreading it wearing out as no other jumper has come close as a backup. I've bought one from Finisterre which may work but I'll always love this Uniqlo one the most.

A black cotton broderie anglaise sundress, off shoulder, fit and flare. Just makes me feel happy and sexy! I also adore my 80s Yves St Lauren shoulder bag. Needs restoring a bit as some of the black has rubbed off but it is a stunner, v practical and was a total bargain. Also a very classic burgundy wool wrap coat. Gorgeous quality, very warm.

My vintage Wrangler denim jacket. I've always loved Wrangler, and I got it in the retro clothes shop I worked in back in the day.

It was second hand and well worn when I got it 25 years ago and it's now pretty much an antique but it is fkn fabulous. Pockets, branding, fading, fraying, all sheer perfection. No fake factory 'distressing' just actual wear.

It is a slightly outsize fit so perfect for this summer. It's a men's jacket so the buttons confuse me every single time but it is the colour of a swimming pool in the sun and I absolutely, utterly adore it.

MorrisZapp · 03/06/2023 11:40

Can I have some homemade karate trousers too please? 🙏🙏🙏

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/06/2023 12:02

It never goes out, but I have a grey alpaca knit cardi from Arket that I bought on Depop at the very start of lockdown. It’s completely the wrong length for me (boyfriend style) but just the perfect thing for wearing at home. It’s super cosy and oversized, and so nice to pop on over my pjs.

SaxSick · 03/06/2023 12:09

I think it is my fake LV leopard sheer print scarf - it goes with anything. It's an immediate uplift and there is something about the colours that just make my face glow.

Of course, but you may have to wait a while as it'll have taken me 40 years to make the first pair Grin
