Smart tailored trousers in long leg length?

Notjustamum10 · 23/05/2023 21:41

Can anyone help me find smart trousers for a new job please? I have been working in creative industries so in jeans for 15 years. Now moving to a professional corporate environment and need to look polished, quickly!

Shirts, blouses and skirts are easy, but don’t know where to go for trousers. I’m a menopausal size 14 (definite tum and bum), 5’11, 33-34” inside leg and want a tailored look, comfort, long leg length and preferably machine-washable. I have big feet and can’t wear heels so will be in loafers or brogue-type shoes and don’t mind an androgynous look. Slim or straight leg would be great.

Not keen on Next fabrics, but they’ll do if nothing else. I’ve looked at Long Tall Sally’s website but they don’t seem to have physical stores any more and really want to feel their fabrics.

Anywhere else with a good range of longer length trousers?

Marks and Spencer's have recently changed their leg lengths, long is now much longer than it used to be. I'm a similar leg length and they now fit me.

Zara and Mango are also quite long. Mint Velvet do some styles in a long length which work on me.

I'm the same height/leg length as you and I always go to M&S for work trousers and jeans too.
Mango are usually quite long and Zara can sometimes work depending on the style.

Maybe try Boden, Karen Millen or maybe Saint & Sofia (who have some styles in a 34/35 which work well with flats/low heels).

The latest offerings from Long Tall Sally since the takeover haven’t been great.

I was going to suggest M&S. Their trousers never used to be long enough but they've recently changed their sizing and now the longer length is really long. They've got a good range of styles, colours and fabrics. It sounds like a wide leg could be what you're looking for.

I need a 34" leg length and find Banana Republic trousers (now available at Next) best. I find M&S too thin / not smart enough - they go shiny.

Reiss also good - length and look wise.

Thank you! I’ll order some M&S trews, certainly their long length trousers weren’t long enough a few years back, but not tried them recently.

I wouldn’t have thought of Karen Millen, that’s a good shout. Boden too.

Agree with the M&S suggestions. I'm a 34 inch inside leg and most styles in long now fit me. They never used too!

I'm same height as you. I'm an L in M&S and Boden. A Next L is slightly too short, so I go for an XL.
Boden Hampshires (not the ponte ones, the "original" ones) are my go to work trouser. I have the 7/8 slim leg for summer and the "straight" (it's a very slight bootleg, but really tiny) for always. I did get a pair of Hampshire ponte ones, but they're are ridiculously thick and look bulky. The ordinary Hampshires disappeared for ages but they've got them back now.
Also been looking at the twill ones above from M&S. The style looks similar to Hampshires.

I'm only 5'8" but have the perennial problem of horrible trousers made from horrible plasticy material without pockets.

I recently tried on some men's chinos at Next. They're £25, they're made of actual sturdy cotton, and they're actually long enough. They fit from the hips downward, a bit gappy round the waist (but they're men's, they were never going to be perfect). And the pockets are HUGE.

So OP, it might be worth trying some men's trousers.

I'm never going back.

Same height as you, 5'11 and same problem OP it's the bane of my life!
To save you time I personally don't recommenf Long tall Sally - very frumpy, flimsy clothing and M &S were just about okay in terms of length but hit and miss with the quality.
I find Reiss fits well but are quite pricey!
