Jowls - the impact of losing just 5 pounds

I had been getting really down about my jawline - there were definite jowls - a significant dip either side of the mouth on the jawline. I used Nu Face and gua sha every day and thought it was helping a little to keep the jaw lifted but I could definitely notice the jowls.
I’m going on holiday soon and had a swimsuit try on session around a month ago and was horrified at my tummy - I started HRT last year (51) and all my weight was just piled on my stomach area making it look distended all the time. I’m 5foot 3, very petite so can look ok in normal clothes but there was no hiding the “skinny fat” on my tummy and bum in swimwear.
So I’ve been doing healthy keto for the last month with IF and have lost 5 pounds - tummy more or less flat now which is wonderful. But the best bit is that my jowls have completely disappeared - jawline back to sharp and lifted. I’m amazed as had been told at a clinic that the jowl was due to skin laxity and gravity with age - turns out it was just fat all along! Just wanted to let anyone now who may have been considering treatment for jowls - might not be necessary.

Oh this is interesting! I thought you were going to say losing weight had given you jowls so I’m very relieved! More incentive to shift my excess weight…

Kidsandcat · 18/05/2023 05:34

Thanks for posting. I am currently losing weight for this purpose. Excess weight on me goes on my face and neck!!!

BirdChirp · 18/05/2023 08:05

Good to know - I've got pronounced jowls and have been about 2 stone overweight for about 3 years. I've been wondering if losing the weight will make it better or worse. I think I will still have them but a lot less - I'll have to finally manage to lose the weight and see!

JMAngel1 · 18/05/2023 08:35

Yes, this is good motivation for me to keep my weight off - I can easily lapse over winter etc. when I don’t have the pressure of swimwear etc but now I’mve seen this result, it should motivate me to keep to my eating plan.
it is pretty brutal though - only two meals a day with IF - strangely though I’m not hungry at all. All cravings gone - before this low carb keto, I was a demon for sugar!

Thanks for sharing this, I also opened this thread thinking it would say weight loss caused the jowls!

lookingforMolly · 18/05/2023 11:23

Oh great good for you! How old are you if you don't mind me asking?
I'm 46 and 14st4lbs and slowly losing weight but concerned about how my face will look, at the moment it's quite rounded with minimal lines.

Crikeyalmighty · 18/05/2023 11:25

@lookingforMolly I'm the same weight as you but have already lost 2 stone and it's mainly come off my face and double chin and lower legs so far - definitely jowls are much reduced

lookingforMolly · 18/05/2023 12:47

That's good

JMAngel1 · 18/05/2023 13:00

I’m 51 - I didn’t have a lot to lose but the difference has been dramatic. This takes me to a BMI of 20 so not going to lose anymore weight. Just got to try not to put it all back on whilst on holiday (all inclusive 😱)

Same. And I start snoring!

MissSmiley · 18/05/2023 14:52

@JMAngel1 that's great news, well done and thanks for sharing, can I ask what weight you are now?

Me too!! That's good news. I am 50 and need to lose weight having put on a lot due to a health condition. Also have jowls. Am very concerned that the skin is just not going to go back but you have given me hope! Thank you!!

coxesorangepippin · 18/05/2023 16:55

Awesomeness

Worth it, eh?

HunterHearstHelmsley · 18/05/2023 16:56

I was getting jowly and was considering different aesthetics options... Lost a stone and they're gone!

JMAngel1 · 18/05/2023 19:00

Yay @HunterHearstHelmsley

@MissSmiley
I didn’t say what my weight is now for fear of eye rolling. I’m really petite framed and only 5foot 3. I started at 8stone 2 and have gone down to 7 stone 11. I had always thought I couldn’t have much fat on me but the 5lb loss has really shown on my stomach, bum and lower face/chin. I guess I must have been skinny fat.

That's great OP! Every Lb is so hard to lose.

I'm not taking the piss here but years ago we had an overweight dog who got sick and spent about a week in a veterinary hospital, when she came out she was a skinny mini but the thing I was most amazed by was the fact that her jowls were gone! I remember being in wonder by how youthful her face looked 😂 (not comparing you to a dog by the way!!) Smile

BBNoM · 18/05/2023 20:53

I'm 5'1 OP and I know what you mean, I was under 7,11 for my wedding 10 years ago and my body was perfect. I'm a stone heavier at 8,11 and I'm decidedly blobby

Plump82 · 18/05/2023 20:57

Wish this happened to me. I've lost 2 stone and still as jowly as I've always been. However I still have more to lose and I'm not where near the weight you are so ill use this as inspiration!!

crispinglovershighkick · 19/05/2023 05:09

About 18mos ago I lost about a stone (lowish carb + highish fat) and my face collapsed, jowls/turkey neck/cat's arse mouth worse than ever.
Never mind, entranced by newly flat stomach and taut arms, kept it off with little effort.
Not to worry, had a rash of winter bugs, then covid, oestrogen patches increased from 75 to 100 and voila it's back. Face looks slightly better, meh.

StrawberryFizz27 · 19/05/2023 05:12

What do you eat, OP?

DayDreamsOfMaria · 19/05/2023 05:45

@JMAngel1, I am similar height and age, but at least a stone heavier, and really struggling to shift it. Would you be willing to share a typical day's menu with us, and also what exercise regime you have? Have a wonderful holiday!!

Pinkest · 19/05/2023 06:06

How many carbs/calories do you stick to? Am thinking of trying keto as nothing else is working for me

JMAngel1 · 19/05/2023 06:38

Well this is what I ate yesterday

Water, multiple milky teas and 1 large cappucino.

12 noon - tupperboxfull of a whole mozarella, ham, black olives, tomatoes, cucumber and a whole red pepper.

6pm. Half plate full brocolli and white cabbahe and then the other half minced beef bolognese.

I don't count calories so not sure but I was full going to bed.

I exercise for 15 mins/day - videos on YT.
Yesterday I did Pamela Reif 10 min standing abs and a 5 min weights Caroline Girvan legs.

i have heard you can get a Botox procedure in your neck called a nefertiti neck lift, they put Botox in the neck band muscles and under your chin along the jawline that weakens the neck muscles ( the ones that look like neck bands) so that they aren’t tight and stop pulling the face down, anyone have any experience of this?

it kind of makes sense when you think about it
