Highlights on dark blonde hair?

I am naturally a dark blonde - not quite brunette but probably the darkest shade of blonde you can go. My hair does go quite light in the summer.

However, i find I'm missing a bit of brightness; I have bad dandruff and need to use a shampoo that strips off a lot of the natural gloss so I'm left with quite a dull and uninspiring look overall. I am thinking of getting highlights done as I like the way I look after a long, healthy summer spent outdoors.

A few things concern me: 1) can it ever look natural? 2) will it be a nightmare to keep up? 3) I seem to remember EVERYONE getting highlights in the 2000s but don't really notice it anymore, is it a bit passé? Or is this a different type of highlight?

I found a hairdresser I trust a few years ago who says she can do some subtle ones that won't need a lot of tlc, but I'm keen to hear what others' experiences have been... thank you Smile

This is me!!
I get the highlights a few shades lighter. The upkeep is minimal, I get the roots done maybe 3 times a year, although with the amount of greys I should probably make it 4 now lol. Totally hassle free but looks much better on me

@Xztop thank you! Is there anything in particular I should ask for or just the above?

Highlights have come a long way since the 2000s, plenty of people have them you just don't notice because they look natural. Balayage is a technique where the colour is painted freehand and is really natural looking sound like might be what you're after

@stuckinthelastcentury I just ask for a half head of foils and said I wanted it to look as natural as possible. They don't use bleach on my hair. It looks really natural which I'm pleased about

Thank you both! I think I'll go for it...
