Black skirt for school size 14 teen

I'm looking for ideas for my DD for school. She's a self conscious teen wearing a ladies 14, (which seems to translate to a 17/18yr old sometimes). Due to some health issues she's carrying a bit for weight particularly around her middle and hips. (She also has a big bust!)

She is allowed to wear trousers or skirts in black for school.
Skirts have to be around knee length or slightly shorter - tube skirts are not allowed.
Trousers cannot be 'skin tight' or jeans and have to be full length not cropped or shorts.

For the last year she's been wearing a partly pleated skirt stiffer 'cotton' skirt and a skater style more stretchy material skirt. Both of which now look awful. She won't wear trousers as she says they are tight around her legs and make her look fat.

Tops are polo shirts and sweatshirts.

At home she lives in skinny jeans, although she has acquired some shorter 'boyfriend'? ones, or jogger bottoms which she dislikes but says are comfortable...

This kid has been bullied (and all kids of other shit) for years... so I'm really hoping someone can suggest something (that isnt budget busting) that might make her feel happier with how she looks in school.

Any suggestions?

Would this work? Comes in different lengths so ignore the fact it says mini, I wear it for work and it's perfect!

i think it’s difficult to say as all the schools round here have one sort style everyone has to wear. What sort of styles are popular at your DD’s school?

throwaway2023 · 09/05/2023 23:17

Or Snag have a few but you would have to check length I guess, it does show it on their size guide on each item

Maybe the longer version... I'll keep an eye on her size for stock.

I don't think she'd thank me for looking at snag given those pics...

@Comefromaway tbh the popular one is the tube skirt - despite it being against uniform. I don't want to buy and have to replace though as I can't afford that. Alot of thr girls wear trousers.

I used to have terrible trouble finding skirts for my daughter until someone suggested. https://www.sturdykids.co.uk/ it advises how to measure and the skirts are adjustable.
My daughter is 13 and 5ft 8. Sturdy not skinny and finding a school skirt that fit her was so hard.
Hope it helps.

Wondered if this might suit?

@LittleOwl153 if it helps I'm 5ft 10 and wear the M&S one
I actually bought it in store and I'm sure they had about 5 different lengths! Changing rooms were shut (covid times) and I was holding them up for ages

Been there as a teen. Pre- Internet too!

Try bravissimo for shirts, the better cut at the bust will.give her more shape overall than a regular fit shirt that may be like a sail beyind her bust, which may be making her feel larger.

There's a polish company too called BiuBiu I think, do busy clothes.

Have her follow "midsizefashion" and similar hashtags on Instagram. Very confidence boosting.

Gently, and between you and me, get her to lose the weight if at all possible. Even 6lbs. I've been there, and it's tough for her.

Oh, and proper fitting pretty, young style, bra.

OK they're called Urkye now

Next? They do a circular version too, if the pencil skirt is against uniform rules here. Both these styles go up to Age 17.

LittleOwl153 · 10/05/2023 12:01

@WineIsMyCarb Thank you. I don't have to deal with shirts for school as they have to have the badged polo. (Which no isn't flattering!)

Bras I'm working on. But she doesn't like 'tight' bands and won't tolerate underwires... so the sports crop tops are not helping... she measures a (BoB size) 34F.

It would do her good to drop a size or 2 but she's dealing with such alot currently (recently diagnosed additiinal sen) that its challenging so I'm aiming for confidence in the skin she's in currently.

This is pretty much what she's wearing currently. It looks awful - but part of that is it being too small.

The lipsy one is a skater style I think... not so flattering on the hips. But the other 2 might be worth a look.

When my DD was a tall size 14 we tried various shops, including M&S, but nothing was really suitable. We ended up buying from the school shop. They do a big range of sizes though still quite short, which most girls want. I imagine most school shops have these skirts.

WineIsMyCarb · 10/05/2023 13:26

Understood.

The staff at bravissimo are fab and will take into account teen shyness, not liking underwires, not wanting tight etc. Couldn't recommend more highly.

They've started to do unwired bralets which might work well. You do have to go and have a good try on though.

Sorry to derail because your question was about skirts but looking back at school days (hideous flared pencil skirt thing), once I felt my top half was sorted I became less concerned about the rest somehow.

Good luck.
