Viscose Rayon dress ruined?

arl0627 · 06/05/2023 19:26

Have I ruined my 100% viscose rayon dress? I’ve worn it once and there were light foundation marks around the collar and rather than take to the dry cleaner I thought i would try and dab it out with some washing up liquid and water. Well, it hasn’t worked and is now stained. Help! Is it worth a trip to the drycleaners to salvage?

Have you tried it in the washing machine?

spottybug · 06/05/2023 19:31

Is it stained with the make up or the washing up liquid?

How to wash Viscose.

Gentle wash

Here's the good news: viscose is meant to go in the washing machine. If you choose to use a washing machine instead of hand washing, put the clothes in a wash bag. Wash in cold water, and select the slowest spin speed. Tips: Turn the garment inside out, choose a gentle cycle, then sit back and relax

Does the label really say dry clean only???

Viscose/rayon is just plastic, so I can't see why you can't wash in at 30' in your washing machine?

I daren’t 🙈

Could be watermarks - can look scary On viscose. Try a wool wash in machine.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 06/05/2023 19:34

I might be wrong but I think viscose cannot be dry cleaned as the solvents used would dissolve it.

arl0627 · 06/05/2023 19:34

Yep, dry clean only

If you wash it be careful when it's wet as it is fragile. Spin on a slightly lower speed and lie flat on a towel or flat rack until mostly dry. Then you can hand on a fat hanger

Banjaxx · 06/05/2023 19:45

Give it an all over hand wash it’ll be fine! Viscose can be delicate when wet so shouldn’t be spun or tumble dried but it’ll be grand with a gentle hand wash!

And viscose looks tiny and shrunk whilst drying but ends up okay. Wash in a COOL wash.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/05/2023 19:56

I don't love viscose but it won't be harmed by water. Just wash it gently in plenty of water with a mild detergent and make up and washing up liquid will come out.

Viscose/rayon is made from wood pulp, not plastic

Supersimkin2 · 08/05/2023 10:17

Viscose is pretty bulletproof.

I wouldn't say that. It can shrink pretty badly of it isn't preshrink before it was made.

sunshinesupermum · 08/05/2023 10:36

CC4712 rayon/viscose is made from wood pulp eg eucalyptus, pine, beech, spruce, or even cotton or bamboo. Viscose rayon is the American term for rayon.

It is not plastic!

OP I have a lot of viscose clothing as I hate polyester. put it in the washing machine

Thank you @sunshinesupermum. Cool/handwash setting as suggested by other posters?
