Jeans that aren’t skinny-can I find some that suit?

So I’d quite like another option to skinny jeans but any that I’ve tried just seem to make me look short and dumpy (maybe cos I am lol) but I keep seeing others in Mom/boyfriend etc and wish I could get a pair.

I’m 5’2 and a 14. But have a saggy tum that needs hidden and this is where my problem lies I think. Because I wear a looser/longer top, any jeans that are also slightly baggy just make me look hellish. Where am I going wrong? Or do I just admit defeat and stick with the skinnies?

just to add, French tucking is not an option!

I know what you mean OP, I also I need to move away from my skinny jeans but every time I try on different styles they make me look awful. But I see lots of people out and about wearing these lovely boyfriend/ relaxed jeans and wonder where they get them.

I'm a size 10, but pear shaped so I carry most of my weight on my thighs, so it really shows when the jeans don't have any stretch in them. Have just sent back another 2 pairs of jeans yesterday that looked great on the website but awful on me.

Herecomesthemoon · 05/05/2023 11:07

I wear M&S Lily slim jeans. They are fairly narrow but not tight like skinny jeans and I find them comfortable. M&S also do Sienna straight leg jeans which are slightly wider. Both these styles cover the tum and look okay when you are fairly short.

PennineWay · 05/05/2023 11:07

Straight cut jeans from crew clothing are great.

WedTheBed · 05/05/2023 11:16

I’m 5ft and a 14 also OP, mom jeans look awful on me.

I do love a bootcut and flare though, I think flare really flatter my legs so they could be worth a shot!

Niftythrifter · 05/05/2023 12:24

Slim straight leg jeans from Primark.

Winglet · 05/05/2023 12:32

I would embrace the flared jeans. I’m slim legged but heavy up too and hated moving to mom jeans. I couldn’t wear skinny as just felt out of touch but knew I wasn’t making the most of my shape. Now I’ve gone flared as they’re very much in fashion and not looking back.

TheOGCCL · 05/05/2023 15:03

Maybe Gap girlfriend.

But you need to wear short tops (or tucked in) with baggier jeans, otherwise you do just look baggy/dumpy/big all over as there isn't any definition.

KnickerlessParsons · 05/05/2023 15:10

M&S have a huge range of jeans in a range of colours - I'd say probably something for every size and shape.

This is what I’m thinking, and that’s a definite no with my stomach.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I always think a flare has to be worn with a heel but I should maybe give them a go. And I am a fan of M&S jeans so will have a look at theirs. I think maybe a straight leg might be my best bet and something that is cropped to the ankle might lengthen my legs a bit…?

I used to like M & S jeans, Lily or Sienna, but I have just discovered Levi boyfriend ones! They are so light and very comfortable. I have several pairs, different leg lengths and surprisingly different waist sizes, 29 and 31 inches. (I'm a size 14, 5 feet tall) They fit really well, mid waist which is perfect. I honestly feel great in them, no riding down etc. give them a try

Farmageddon · 05/05/2023 17:53

After this thread I went shopping for jeans today and tried a good few pairs on. I accidentally picked up the wrong size of these (one size up) and tried them on, and they fit really well - loose fitting but not baggy. So chuffed.

I've just bought these in the dark denim from White Stuff and have now ordered the mid denim ones as well. They seem fairly generous around the waist (size 18) but the legs are fairly slim.

Why not wear them with spanx or other suscky pants and french tuck?

MedievalMadness · 05/05/2023 18:30

Levi 725s look really good on me. I’m around your height and size. I got some on eBay after getting some in John Lewis sale and finding them really flattering. They’re £77 in Levi’s own sale atm with a 10% offer and free delivery. They’re expensive but they stay in shape and don’t get saggy on the knees and bum and they wash really well. A 12 fits me well but I got an 11 on eBay and I’ve lost some weight they fit too.

Jeans that aren’t skinny-can I find some that suit?

No amount of spanxing will make my c section tum worth exposing sadly.

These look def worth a try - although the model has nice long legs unlike me 😂

Interesting there’s a couple of recommendation for Levi’s, I used to buy them all the time years ago and had kind of forgotten they still existed!

If you change the cut of your jeans, then the whole silhouette changes, meaning you need different tops to make them work. Skinny jeans are great with longer, looser tops but the looser jeans need a more fitted top. I hope I’m making sense!

I do wonder if this is why changing your style of jeans is tricky?

I like Next slim fit, they’re quite close fitting without being skinny.

Lemursandions · 07/05/2023 08:23

OP - I agree with others that looser jeans do need shorter tops unfortunately.

I do understand where you are coming from re stomach. I had fibroid surgery late last year and have ended up with the stomach issue ( looks even worse to my mind as the scar is higher than c section!). I’ve really struggled with it.

As none of my previous clothes fit anymore I went to a JL personal shopper. She strongly encouraged me into some looser shorter tops ( and to French tuck). I was resistant as thought it made my stomach look awful BUT gave the shorter tops a go. Can’t believe the amount of compliments I got. I think it made me realise that I maybe notice the stomach more than others ( and as long as I don’t look at the side view I feel ok 😁). So maybe worth at least giving a try?

Colinorpercy · 09/05/2023 22:56

I just feel like a barrel if I leave the tummy on show! What i really need to do is stopping eating crap and that might shed a few pounds!
I tried a pair of flares on at the weekend and I quite liked them but did feel I could only wear them with heels. I think I might try a slim/straight pair and see how they look as maybe still slim enough but just not as skin tight as the ones I wear.

Would second the m&s lily slim; they are the only m&s jeans I get on with and are helping me transition from skinny. I’m 5.6 and I get short/petite as I like them shorter on the leg and body - might be better for you as well (I find m&s are ridic high waisted). Best of luck!
