outfit for PGCE interview

Hi,
i have an interview for PGCE Secondary in 10 days. I am of course terrified about the interview but also at a loss about what to wear.
I have been at home with the children for 7 years and so do't really have smart clothes, they are either scruffy day to day clothes(think silky slips over jeans and big jumpers), or overly glam going out clothes, nothing appropriate for an interview.
So i need ot buy something new but i am at a loss - all i know is that a suit is not necessary (thank god!), so what is suitable - i dont want to be uncomfortable and i am usaully a skirt girl.
Ideas please - i am on a budget too - as cheap as poss

WHy not a suit? I wore one and so did everyone else I interviewed with.

I dont know - i was just told that a suit was not necessary but smart clothes where expected - I think they expect you to dress the way you would at school when you are working. - the only teachers i know are men so style tips are not all that useful from them

How about a nice A line skirt, fitted blouse or top, boots?

somersetmum · 17/02/2008 20:45

If you are going to buy new clothes anyway, I would buy a suit if you can. Just because it's not necessary doesn't mean you can't wear one. You will need one for your teaching interviews next year. A nice two-piece trouser suit; that's what I would buy.

janeite · 17/02/2008 20:46

I don't think a suit is necessary (I certainly didn't wear one on my PGCE interviews years ago). I'd go for a knee length or longer skirt, wrap cardigan, boots, decent coat and a pashmina - smart but comfortable and you can inject a bit of personality into it through colour or pattern in the skirt etc.

Good luck!

somersetmum · 17/02/2008 20:47

Sorry, just read that you prefer skirts. A skirt suit then, from M&S or Next.

theangelshavethephonebox · 17/02/2008 20:47

can't go wrong with a suit even if it's not exactly necessary, and agree with somersetmum that you'll need it when you apply for jobs

good luck with it

TheFallenMadonna · 17/02/2008 20:47

I didn't wear a suit for any of my interviews either...

luciemule · 17/02/2008 20:47

Agree with SSM - then you culd always wear the suit trousers for the pgce interview and the whole suit for next years's teaching interviews.

hercules1 · 18/02/2008 16:53

I did my PGCE years ago. Different if you've been told you don't have to. I would wear one though as it would make me more confidant.
