Has anyone here achieved the holy grail: hair with NO brittle/split ends?

I have stopped straightening, use hydrating/nourishing products, only blowdry on a lower heat and generally treat my hair quite nicely. But STILL I have brittle hair that breaks, although is not as bad as it used to be and the hairdressers I have had say it is in fairly good condition.

It drives me mad, although my family thinks I am mental. Is it possible to have split free hair? My hairdresser says no, what do you think?

Having what sounds like v similar hair to you, my answer would be no too.

Not unless you only brush it once a day, hardly ever wash or blow dry it and keep it wrapped up in a silk scarf.

Can I recommend a good conditioner?
naked truth from boots is very very good-I had/had crap hair but tis now all lovely and soft!

SheikYerbouti · 17/02/2008 16:10

I second Naked Truth. Excellent!

My hair doesn't end up all lank after 3 mins either

DarrellRivers · 17/02/2008 16:11

i very rarely brush my hair
never use a hairdryer
and wash hair daily with conditioner
mid length hair
no split ends
it's the blow drying that does it imo

DarrellRivers · 17/02/2008 16:11

and i don't look like a bird's nest either

expatinscotland · 17/02/2008 16:14

i never get them, despite blow drying and straightening daily - i have oily hair, though.

but dd1 NEVER does any of that and she gets them.

i think some people are prone to them.

have you tried eating more oily fish or omega-3 rich foods or using a dietary supplment?

MaryAnnSingleton · 17/02/2008 16:17

my hair isn't my best feature, but it has no split ends and I wash and dry it every day

Mercy · 17/02/2008 16:21

I've never had split ends- my hair is thick and fairly coarse though (I very rarely use a hair dryer or any products except conditioner)

Isn't hair condition sometimes related to diet?

Lauriefairycake · 17/02/2008 16:23

I've never had split ends

It is shoite in other ways

DarrellRivers · 17/02/2008 16:23

probably like stretch marks then..
genetic i reckon

I had split ends for years, but now don't have any at all. My hair is in great condition....but! (there's always a but) it took years of careful care (no irons, only washing every other day), regular cuts (every 6 weeks) and pretty expensive products to get it that way. i can strongly recommend kerastase products as they helped alot, but the stuff that made the big difference was the Alterna products

here

the caviar stuff is excellent and a little goes a long way....it has made all the difference to my hair.

greeneyedgirl · 19/02/2008 13:23

Thanks Hoarsewhisperer, is what I thought really...long term solutions! I have stopped straightening, I also get it trimmed regularly. At the moment I am experimenting with drying my hair with the cool setting on my hair dryer and not brushing it to style it. Looks very unstylish, but at least I don't feel like I am torturing it!

I've just had it coloured too (succumbed because of copious amounts of grey), but I refused to let them use any bleach for the highlights (like I used to do).

Everyone thinks my hair looks great, and it doesn't look in that bad condition really, I can see that. BUT the "bits" that come off the ends drive me mad. I am pretty mental where my hair is concerned and I guess I am going to have to go for the "long haul" and hope it improves over the years.

secret agent

Tis fab (and relatively cheap)

Swishes hair

Well, according to my hairdresser, I have no split ends at all. In fact, she was quite shocked when I told her I straighten my hair every day without fail. I wash my hair every other day and always blow dry, else I end up with Worzel Gummidge hair.

Not sure what the trick is to be honest; I had split ends for years and that was BEFORE I discovered straighteners?! Thinking about it though, I only went to the hairdresser when I really had to, and nowadays I tend to go every 5-6 weeks for a trim, 8 weeks is the longest I've left it for a long time.

I always use a good conditioner and always always always a heat protection spray! At the moment am using Regis stuff as there was a deal on in salon just before Christmas. Kerastase are V. good, and the best heat protection spray I found was a Matrix one in an orange spray bottle.

I don't colour my hair any more either - in fact, thinking about it, that's probably what used to wreck my hair...

PortAndLemon · 20/02/2008 21:50

I don't have any at the moment -- I never blowdry and get it trimmed every month. If I go longer than that between trims then I do get split or brittle ends.
