What to wear to a conference

I'm going to a work related conference this summer. I'm not an academic, but a professional in the field. The delegates will be a mixture of academics and industry professionals. I'm not presenting, just attending.

I'm in my mid 40s. The field is fairly male dominated, although becoming more balanced.

What should I wear?

One colleague wore a velour tracksuit for three days, including to the conference dinner.

The last conference I went to I was seriously underdressed and I was surprised at the effort people had gone to to dress up. I wore jeans and a polo neck and did not fit in at all. I would err on the side of smart and take a range of things for choice.

I have a couple of dresses from Cos that I have worn to conferences. They fit well and are easily dressed up with shoes and jewellery. I also have some decent jackets that can be popped over them if I feel the need.
