What to wear to Daughter’s first holy communion?

Hi! Wanting outfit suggestions for me to wear to my Daughter’s first holy communion? I’ve been that absorbed in her outfit I’ve only just thought about what I may wear!
We are based in England. What do the Mum’s generally wear these days? I recall my mum wearing a nice dress and jacket to mine and I’ve not been to one since my own. Is it formal or not as much these days? Don’t want to be over/under dressed!

Well, seeing as the last FHC I went to was my own, which was 46 years ago , I don't think I can be much help. I would think smart casual similar to what you would wear to a wedding.

nofusspot · 30/04/2023 20:53

What denomination is this?

AssertiveGertrude · 30/04/2023 20:54

A nice day dress is what all the mums wore here. Some wore a light blazer but most didn’t. Some wore a trouser suit

This was the type of outfit (we’ve been to three)

Assuming Catholic, I would say a nice dress, similar to what you'd wear to a wedding but probably not quite as dressy. At one of my DCs a few years ago, one of the mums had linen trousers and a nice top, but to be honest she looked a bit underdressed. I do think it would vary across the country though. I think my area/parish would be on the dressier end.

Thank you for all replies so far. Yes, it’s a catholic service.

@AssertiveGertrude these are the types of outfits I’ve started looking at.

smart casual day dresses is the way I think I’m going to go. Think my husband was surprised when I suggested he wore a suit but then he’s never been to a holy communion before.

I think you're right. And yes he should wear a suit.

QuickNameChangeForMeToday · 30/04/2023 21:24

It’s all smart day dresses with optional blazers around here too. Definitely a suit for men and ‘Sunday best’ for kids.

AssertiveGertrude · 30/04/2023 22:40

My dh wore a suit and 60 percent did

others wore a shirt and casual type blazer and a few wore a dark polo type top

but I really think a suit is appropriate for you own child’s day

Marshmallowblondie · 30/04/2023 23:02

Yes, you're on the right track. Not as dressy as a wedding usually.

That's very pretty, and appropriate for communion mass. Is there a luncheon in the church hall, or are you doing anything at home?

Popsicle30 · 01/05/2023 19:13

Yes there’s a short gathering the church hall and then we have something planned at home.

That’s absolutely lovely - I hope you have a lovely day

make sure to get a piñata (our twins loved this the most at home after)
