Best curly hair ranges

I've been trying to embrace my curls for the last few months after dying my hair straight all my life. I've been using boucleme products but I don't think I am that fussed with them. Photo of my hair, think it is a mixture of 2C/3a it's quite fine but quite a lot of it. It has been bleached so tends to be dry and definitely prone to frizz. So, now that my boucleme bottles are coming to an end, I'm looking for a new range to try. Are the likes of flora and curl, curlsmith, kerastase any good? Any recommendations, mostly just want to use a whole set from the same company (cause I'm lazy). Thanks, so hard with so many products out there.

I have just bought Aveda curl enhancer...happy to report back when I get the chance to use it.

(Mostly posting to give your thread a bump though as I have no other useful input)

Flora and curl was too moisturising for me
I like curlsmith but haven't tried their gel, think they have the biggest range
Only curls I didn't like the gel
Treluxe I really love

Loads of reviews here which might help

Lovely hair!
I’d recommend Curlsmith. I love their products. I’ve tried bouchmel and didn’t like. Not fussed about flora and curl stuff I’ve tried either.

Thank you for the replies. I will order some curlsmith and see how I get on with that. I really didn't like the smell of the boucleme so will be pleased not to smell like lemon disinfectant anymore. I've persevered with it to finish the bottles as it's not terrible, I just think they'll be a better match for me out there. I'll have a look at the aveda too.

Really useful link. I'm now reading through all her product reviews.

Thanks

Update. I've been using the curl-smith range for a few weeks now and definitely prefer it to the Boucleme. The shampoo in particular I really like. I went down the rabbit warren of the curl maven website and think I have probably been using too much by way of rich conditioners and need more protein. Still working on that but the website was really helpful. Thanks

Mine is fine but very curly, gets greasy and weighed down with heavy curl products and cremes etc. Most products designed for mixed race hair are no good for me. I like imbue shampoo, kerastase leave in conditioner, the pink scrunching jelly (can't remember the brand sorry) and I rotate my conditioner/mask as I haven't found one I love yet.
Good luck on your search!

curlykate99 · 25/05/2023 12:59

Sorry it's Keracare by Avalon not kerastase.

greenspaces4peace · 25/05/2023 13:50

I use DivaCurl conditioner and Moroccan Oil curl cream.
I’m mixing brands due to pricing, the same volume MO conditioner is 2X more than DC and the curl cream situation is similar but with DC being more than MO.

I had a sample of kerastase curl manifesto and it was really lovely. Hideously expensive though.

Your hair sounds a bit like mine, and I use umberto giannini curl jelly - I think that's the one in the pink bottle you mention

That's the one! It's annoying hair type isn't it, neither here nor there. What conditioner do you go for?

WhereAreWeNow · 25/05/2023 20:05

I really like Umberto Giannini gel. I use the 'beach' one which I think has same ingredients but it just smells nicer than the other one to me.
I recently got a Flora and Curl spritz thing and I can report that it smells gorgeous.

muddlingthrou · 25/05/2023 20:10

@curlykate99 - I find I have to rotate my conditioner as they stop working for me! Most recent success is an OGX one. Do you do anything with your hair overnight?

Minxyjinx · 25/05/2023 20:14

Kerastase is amazing

colour wow do a great shampoo/conditioner too aswell as their dreamcoat for curly hair

i swear by cantu define and shine custard for styling

WoofWoofBeachLife · 25/05/2023 20:49

I have wavy hair with the odd time it goes curlier. I have no idea what my hair type is how did you find that out. I'd love to know what my hair needs moisture or protein wise. I can't spend a lot on products but would love to treat my hair to what it needs. I'll have a look at the link above xx

babyboyHarrison · 25/05/2023 21:46

It's been very strange trying to embrace my curls after having it straight all my life. It's quite interesting how other people have a completely different perception of them than I do. I always felt self conscious about them and thought they looked a frizzy mess so never learnt how to look after them. I've had compliments from complete strangers walking down the road and that never happened when I tried to keep it straight. It's still a journey trying to make the most out of them but I'm so glad I've embraced it, no more worrying that drizzle will make it look all poofy, it looks better when it gets a bit rained on. It's quite liberating but I'm glad I work from home as it takes an age to dry! I have found a hairdresser close by that specialties in curly hair so I'm going to give that a go soon. I'm trying to grow it but it is getting curlier and curlier now I'm not straightening so think it's going to take a while.

@WoofWoofBeachLife
Curl type doesn't really tell you if you need protein or moisture, anybody can need them sometimes. Protein helps strengthen, but too much can do more harm than good! Can also do too much moisture sometimes too which can also do more harm than good.
I just do protein when it's weak, moisture when it's dry. Or protein when I've over done it with moisture. Both before anything damaging like bleach or high heat.

There are loads of curl type guides you can look at. Do a Google image search for hair type chart or similar. Curl type doesn't always give a huge clue to what to do with your hair though, just what it looks like. You can be 3a and high porosity, or 3a and low porosity for example, and that will make more difference with products or routine than just curl type alone.

@muddlingthrou not really, it always gets squashed or stretched beyond the point of no return, so I've just accepted that I can only wear it down on day 1. Or I just put it straight into plaits after a wash and keep them for a few days.

@babyboyHarrison I'm glad you're learning to love your curls, I've lost count of the times I've literally cried over my hair. Ridiculous really, but learning what your particular curls can and can't do is the key. I hope you get a great cut too, nothing better for making the most of the volume!
