‘WHY ARE PEOPLE OBSESSED WITH LOOKING RICH & BORING?‘

Slightly loving this low energy takedown of Succession / Paltrow / The Row stealth wealth.

(Even while I waste half the day fantasising about What I’ll Buy When I’m Properly Rich.)

Why Are People Obsessed With Looking Rich & Boring?

The quiet luxury or stealth wealth trend is just another excuse to fetishize wealth, or at least dressing wealthy, which doesn't excuse it being so boring.

Good article, that. Thank you.

I have the reverse problem, really. I could put on a Tom Ford hoodie, and it would look instantly Primark.

MarciaSaysANumber · 28/04/2023 07:51

Pretty sure if Kendall Roy mixed in some Primark with the rest of his $$$$$ wardrobe no one would notice.

Only Kendall’s rich mates would notice.

I thought quiet luxury was meant to be an eco by less and buy better thing, but what do I know 🤷‍♀️

AluckyEllie · 28/04/2023 08:22

That was an interesting read, thanks! I’d like to think if I was that wealthy I’d be full on bright colours and feathers😂

MarciaSaysANumber · 28/04/2023 10:08

I’m not sure about the underlying assumption of the piece, though - that billionaires wear these clothes to signal their wealth to others if they’re ilk. Surely that’s entirely needless?

Bloody hell! ‘of their ilk’ is wot I wrote. Angry

Even if I win euromillions tonight, I don't think I could spend 15k on a T-shirt.

But I find it all fascinating.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 28/04/2023 13:44

Surely it’s just lifestyle creep rather than intentional signalling of wealth. You get more money, you spend more on everyday items.

CreationNat1on · 28/04/2023 14:01

Replace the judgey pants, with something more playful. Less bitter, more banter.

I often think this but then who knows? Maybe if you won the euro millions suddenly it wouldn’t seem like a lot to spend a grand on a belt.

jay55 · 28/04/2023 14:40

See a grand on an accessory I could totally do. And I might even buy a T-shirt that's several hundred. It's the thought of what else I could spend 15k on that would make me stop, I think.

Agree it probably is a creep, moving up and up in the shopping world.

palygold · 28/04/2023 14:41

Agree that only Kendall's rich friends would notice. I wonder if Tom or Greg would though.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 28/04/2023 14:47

In Succession a lot of Kendalls clothes were far from stealth wealth, even gaudy. Think Gucci, tiger bomber jackets et al. He really mixed it up when he was totally mixed up himself!

mathanxiety · 28/04/2023 15:32

The uber expensive gear is just more expensive versions of the clothing worn by millions of middle class Americans.

British style tends to be more flamboyant.

Papernotplastic · 28/04/2023 15:45

It’s all a bit joyless. Gwyneth Paltrow in particular makes being wealthy look and sound beige and awful.

Maybe she is "grey rocking" the world.

tobee · 28/04/2023 17:12

It's also interesting because there used to be a difference between US and U.K. fashion but I don't think there is so much now.

Interesting also because of what "old money" means in the US compared to here.

tobee · 28/04/2023 17:15

They've got "old money" we've got "upper class" and they are not the same thing. Do people in the U.K. still want to look moneyed by looking like a "toff"?

MarciaSaysANumber · 29/04/2023 00:15

It is quite a thing on MN, yes …

Of course, have you read the "how to look wealthy" posts? Whilst over on AIBU there's a strange obsession on what is middle class.
