Help! Find me a dress, desperate

I am best woman for a friend of mine in a few weeks. I thought I had my outfit sorted, but having seen a picture of the actual suit the groomsmen are wearing it is nothing like the picture I was shown 😭 I'm now without a dress as the one I bought doesn't in any way match! I don't care what style it is so long as it fits the occasion (formal) and is a similar colour to the suits. Help me. I've ordered loads but they are all really navy, when the suit is a sort of blue/grey two tone.

Pics below include the original picture I was using to match the dress to, and a picture of three materials next to each other - material on the left is the actual suit, middle the dress I bought and on the right is a navy cardigan (I took extra colours for comparisons). Any suggestions?

For added info, I'm 38, 5"2, size 10/12.

Also to add, dying the dress I have isn't possible due to the material it's made of

I don’t I think they need to match? If you like the dress go for it!

ShandaLear · 19/04/2023 20:58

Can you share a picture of your dress, OP?

MathsNervous · 19/04/2023 20:58

Matching isn't necessity at a wedding, don't worry.

Zebracat · 19/04/2023 21:00

I don’t really get why it’s a thing. I know sidesmen often wear similar, but not always. I think you will be fine in the dress you have . Or maybe find a jacket in that colour if its important to you or the bride/ groom. It looks like it would be impossible to match online.

thedevilinablackdress · 19/04/2023 21:01

Probably better if you don't try to match, unless the fabric is exactly the same it'd be better to have more of a contrast.

this looks a similar ish colour? Next day delivery, could return it there and then if it’s not right?

another option might be to go for the same colour as their waistcoats? Or maybe to have the same flowers as a corsage?

Guinea pig thank you for your suggestion, I'll take a look.

I suppose I'm wanting the same/similar colour to try and blend in. I think I'll already look 'odd' as a woman standing on the grooms side. We will be having the same buttonholes (I'll have a magnetic one) so I won't look like a guest who got lost thankfully.

You could ask Peter Posh about buying some of this fabric to get a dress made? I'm assuming they only make men's suits.

Otherwise, it's going to be a bit hit & miss anyway, unless you're incredibly lucky! I think you may as well wear the dress you've already chosen and are happy with. But if you're determined to match ... Try asking about the fabric.

DH had a best woman and she looked fabulous. It was a v chic London hotel to give a sense of formality.

I think the way to go would be something that tones with the groomsman rather than matches as it will be very hard to get an exact match. I also personally think you should “own” being different as your friends could have asked 4 identical 6’2 men if it was all about the aesthetics, but they didn’t do that they asked you because it means more to have you. I actually think the dress tones nicely with the suits from the photos. Do you look good in it? If so I’d stick with that.

Coffeeandcards · 20/04/2023 06:35

What colour will the buttonholes be?

RobertaTheRotund · 20/04/2023 06:46

Agree with others that you don't need to match perfectly and that if they'd wanted a matchy matchy wedding, they wouldn't have picked a best woman! Pick what tones well with the Groom's suit and what looks nice on you

NotHangingAround · 20/04/2023 06:49

DH had a best woman too. She wore sequinned bodycon! It matched nothing and she looked great.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 20/04/2023 07:08

OP my husband had two female friends and several male friends as grooms.

The girls wore black cocktail dresses and the boys wore morning suits with ties.

There was no matching going on.

And my only bridesmaid wore a gold cocktail dress. I told her to choose whatever made her happy.
