What are people wearing to wedding evening dos these days

I haven’t been invited to a wedding for many years so I’m very excited to be going to one, in June. I normally love shopping for an outfit for such things, but I’m finding I’m flummoxed this time because I don’t really know what sort of thing to look for.

As it’s the evening do, and not the full day, should I be thinking more cocktail dress and less pastel suit/floaty floral?

I’ve got this Vivienne Westwood dress that I bought from eBay some time ago, that I’ve never worn. Would this work? I’ve seen some more interesting shoes that I think would look good with it rather than these rather pedestrian black courts.

I’m open to buying something new though.

I like that, jazz it up with colourful shoes

AncientToaster · 17/04/2023 14:22

I love the shape of the dress but the pink flower positioning and roundness of the flower reminds me of a pregnancy bump. Sorry op but that’s my genuine take on it.

VenusClapTrap · 17/04/2023 14:28

Ha yes I know what you mean; fortunately it’s less like that in the flesh.

You look a million dollars! Love the shape- it's really fun.

It looks great on you :)

VenusClapTrap · 18/04/2023 05:54

Thank you! I think I’ll wear it.

Can anyone help me find some fabulous shoes to go with this? I ordered some amazing black and mustard ones from Chie Mihara, but they arrived and they’re too small 😭. Larger sizes sold out.

I’ve scoured all the shoe places I can think of, and can’t find anything. Budget around £200 but would stretch to £300 if I find something I really love.

Agree with this comment.

Perfect but ditch the high heels.

The pink flower on that dress is really oddly positioned? It makes it looks like you have a swollen belly but maybe it’s the angle? Seems so odd to have arranged the pattern that way. Draws the eye in a really strange way.

I tho evening wise anything goes as most people will be too tipsy to notice! Plus it will be dark or getting dark. Seems a shame to buy something new unless you have another event you could wear it for?

AgnesGray · 23/04/2023 13:38

I think the waist hits too low on your body if I'm honest. I'm not a fan of the dress shape or print.

I'd wear something less 'jazzy' if it were me. That looks a bit fun aunt for me (sorry and it's just my opinion which you are v free to ignore(

Now you've said it, I can't unsee it 😂😂

Do you think as a brand they come up small? I have the most standard size feet imaginable. A 37 or a 37.5 regular width fits me in every brand. I'm tempted by several Chie Mihara shoes.

Lol at fun aunt!!

Actually OP this comment is right I think- the slightly dropped waist coupled with the odd pattern and the full skirt is really 80s and doesn’t flatter you at all.

What I can see of your arms and legs suggests you have a cracking figure that this dress isn’t doing any favours at all.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/04/2023 14:33

I'm a big VW fan but agree that the dress isn't great, largely because of the pink flower. Might it look a bit better with something over it? Tempting?!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/04/2023 14:34

Yes, it is very 80s, but that's potentially part of its possible appeal?

OldHouseLover · 23/04/2023 15:43

Sorry OP but I don't like this dress at all. The cut & fit is odd & seems v dated but not in a good vintage way

The pattern is awful & I agree that the big flesh coloured flower is so badly placed..it's v off-putting.

As others have said you have a lovely figure but this dress is not working on Aby level

VenusClapTrap · 23/04/2023 16:20

Hmm so my dress not getting much love here. Maybe I’ll have a rethink. Although it’s interesting that a couple of you think I have a nice figure - thank you! But I really don’t. And that’s why I like the dress actually because it makes me look like I do! I’m very peri-menopausal apple shaped actually.

Maybe I’ll save it for a summer barbecue or something and test drive it with close friends.

Which means it’s back to the drawing board. Argh.

Softleftpowerstance · 23/04/2023 16:23

Yea I’m sorry, that big flower makes your stomach look like a hard boiled egg. It’s a very unfortunate design. The low waist doesn’t help either.

VenusClapTrap · 23/04/2023 16:24

@NatashaDancing maybe my feet have got fatter in my advancing years, because this has happened a few times recently. Although they weren’t even close to fitting - I couldn’t even get my feet in them. So I’d say it probably is worth going up a size (or half size).

OP posts:
FranksOcean · 23/04/2023 16:28

Well I like it OP and you should definitely wear it with bright shoes!

TescoFinestMyArse · 23/04/2023 16:37

Sorry OP I really don't like it. The colours are a bit nothingy. They aren't vibrant or contrasting against the black in the dress. Just looks a bit worn, the patterns aren't very nice and the shape is very unflattering especially where the skirt starts. There should be some bright yellows and fuchsias in that dress.

I'd go for a block coloured pencil dress maybe mustard, pink or something and a blocked heal.

Bobbybobbins · 23/04/2023 17:42

I love the dress OP!

OldHouseLover · 23/04/2023 17:53

@NatashaDancing I have Chie Mihara shoes. I'm 38 / 38.5 but just checked & mine are 38 & fit me perfectly.

They're really well made shoes
