Loose fitting shorts for pear shapes

I love wearing shorts. I run a lot and tan well so I’ve always felt confident in them and given the choice would wear them as soon as the weather turns warm until September, and I run in shorts all year except the middle of winter. There aren’t many areas of my body I actually like so I am determined to keep wearing shorts if I can.

however, I’ve put on a bit of weight this year, and I don’t think I will fit into my existing ones this summer. Some of my new weight is fat, but some is muscle mass, I have glutes, quads and hamstrings (bum and thighs) and a fairly narrow waist in comparison. I need nice, loose fitting shorts, I’d like a high waist but am happy with a low rise. But the problem is anything that fits on my waist is too tight round my thigh. Everything looks like cycling shorts and is horribly unflattering. If I go any bigger in size the waist will be too big.

please help me mumsnet, where can I get them??

for reference, I bought some fat face blue chino ones on Vinted and they are the right size on my waist but way too tight all the way round the thigh, but they are the sort of style I’m looking for.

Very casual in style but Free People hotshot harem shorts are amazing and should do everything you ask for

Just had a good look at their website, they are lovely. Have you bought from there?

I am a similar shape and have found Mountain Warehouse shorts to be a good fit.

Yeah loads. Their returns are free and reliable too. I appreciate that a lot of their stuff is either natural fibres or things like viscose, very little polyester. I also own two pairs of these shorts as they make me so happy

I am pear shaped and absolutely love Uniqlo linen shorts. They're very flattering

Hedjwitch · 15/04/2023 19:31

I like Cotton Traders for longer shorts

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/04/2023 19:33

I'm a similar shape. Chino shirts are too rigid. You need linen/linen mix shorts which will baggy-up as you wear them. I got some excellent ones from Morrisons last year!

Lucy and yak
I'm toying with some of these, but I don't really like any of the colours.

summerfinn · 15/04/2023 19:54

Those free people ones aren't the best . The kinda look like a nappy. I hate the crotch area. I too need shorts with more room around the legs but these are a no🙈

Longwhiskers · 15/04/2023 20:15

I’m a pear and also have the linen uniqlo ones, they’re nice. I looked at the free people ones but don’t like the pocket thing on the front! Wouldn’t flatter me at all.

Belmondo · 15/04/2023 20:49

Ah, I know what you mean, shape-wise! I have two pairs of linen M&S ones with pockets and a wide elasticated/gathered waist that I think they do every year - mine were from Vinted. I have chambray and black.

I also rate Passenger shorts - their soft Tigard style would suit you, I think (sort of towelling fabric) and also the Out There hemp swimshorts, which look like normal shorts but dry very quickly if you swim in them. They also have zip pockets, very useful. God I love shorts!! I don't have amazing legs but I just really like wearing shorts 😁

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/04/2023 21:08

@Belmondo i like those, but I think the thigh measurement will be way too small for me.

I have seen these on Amazon (pic below) which I might try. I do think I’m going to have to work towards more loose, floaty almost skirt like shape rather than chino/denim as they are too rigid like a poster said above. I don’t want them completely tight touching my thigh, I just look horrible and they make my legs look really fat

Not as nice quality as some here, but I have some from Matalan that are the cut that might work

I'm a pear shape too and tall (5ft 11). I have these from m&s. They are nice and long and high waisted, roomy but still flattering.

I got Next boy shorts recently but sized up for thigh and bum space. Make sure you try them on as different colours are slightly different sizes. I also got some linen mix ones from there - I got both black and bright blue but am sure they had other colours.
I have some denim ones from Matalan ones that I bought last year. Lovely on my legs but paper bag waist which isn’t ideal for me. I’ve seen the same/ similar in store this year. I got some floaty ones from there recently in a nice bold pattern. No pockets though.
And I got some surprisingly lovely ones from Shein for about a fiver! They had very detailed measurements which was helpful, especially for length.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/04/2023 22:18

I just bought two pairs of Uniqlo ones on Vinted (and with my balance too so they cost me nothing!) - high waisted, loose fit.

thanks for the recommendations!

I just thought I’d update my thread in case anyone was looking for answers to similar…

uniqlo is definitely the way to go. Their linen type shorts fit true to size on the waist and then are very loose on the thigh. Not too long either, they aren’t frumpy at all, but the pair I ordered today are lovely. For ref: I’m a 10-12 and ordered a medium

Oh god I agree. I don't want to look as though I've shat my pants.

I used to have a pair of short culottes, like a divided skirt. They were absolutely brilliant and I can never find any as nice. They looked like a short flowery skirt but were divided.

They look great. Just ordered myself the stripy pair. Thanks OP.
