Holiday evening looks

Going to Greece soon and no idea what to wear in the evening... Last year I noticed so many stylish looking women at dinner and vowed to be one this year but haven't worked out their secret yet! We will be eating in hotel most nights but it's a nice hotel and I'd like to look vaguely stylish..

Im late 30s, size 10 but not particularly toned at the moment, slightly pear shaped, quite pale, and like simple block colours and nothing too figure hugging. So for day I like stuff like shorts and linen shirts, co-ords, and t shirt dresses or long sleeve mini dresses. Colours like khaki, navy, white and black. I struggle to look any different for the evening and would just like to look a bit more special but without wearing heels! On other people i love stuff like floaty floral maxi dresses on holiday but just feel like they are not really me!

Have a look at massimo dutti. Elegant, simple and timeless pieces. Just need a bit of highlighter, blusher and some gold accessories and you're done.

Rina66 · 11/04/2023 20:27

Could you wear more abstract print maxis or broderie anglais, rather than floral? I like block colour ones too.

Yes Massimo Dutti kind of thing is probably what I'm looking for, thank you! And I don't mind print if not floral . Thanks for the suggestions! That green abstract one is lovely but think it would overwhelm me - just really don't seem to suit much print at all weirdly.

Love this one although always resort to black which is not the most exciting and feel I need to branch out of my comfort zone, just not too much!

Is this nice? Or boring??

Love that linen halter but I’d wear it with a thin leather silver belt and silver sandals. Or big earrings and gold/silver sandals.
I wear lots of black and navy in the evenings in holidays but they look evening due to my jewellery, belts, pretty sandals

BHRK · 11/04/2023 21:04

When I say sandals I mean flat strappy ones, not heels

I have the red one! It's in the box for return though. It's beautiful but is a bit body con on me. A size bigger would be too loose in certain areas so it's going back. Got 2 others though.

declutteringmymind · 11/04/2023 21:12

It is one you can dress up or down though so try it on and see how you go. Sizing is big though. I'm a 10/12 normally and had to buy XS. £3.95 to return also.

Littlemisssunseeker · 11/04/2023 21:20

I loved the red one too but don't have the daring for that yet! Am feeling a bit low in confidence at the moment so think it's affecting my shopping... keep thinking things will just look bad.

Which other ones did you get @declutteringmymind if you don't mind sharing? There were a couple I liked but not sure what would look like on.

And @BHRK thank you- need to up the accessories game ! Just found some lovely ones in zara

Could you do your day look but add in some jewellery?

declutteringmymind · 11/04/2023 21:23

These OP. I'm short and curvy so they suit me better than the others.

I love the dress that @Rina66 posted.
I have this dress from Cos which I'll be taking with me to Spain in a few weeks time https://www.cos.com/en_gbp/women/womenswear/dresses/product.ribbed-tube-dress-black.0995969004.html which I'll wear with flat strappy sandals (definitely not chunky ones) a layered necklace, stack bracket and nice earrings.
I tend to veer towards plain simple colours, most of my holiday dresses are black or white.
How about some wide leg trousers in cream or white with a simple black vest top or halterneck? Again dress things up with jewellery.

Littlemisssunseeker · 11/04/2023 21:48

Those are both lovely @declutteringmymind does the second one fit quite loose and flowy? Liked it but couldn't imagine on! And def think maybe it's time to branch out from wearing rhe same pair of gold hoops every day and invest in some slightly more jazzy jewellery!

Love the black maxi, I tend to black dresses on holiday, as others have said, i wear them with lots of gold or silver jewelry

RTHJ14 · 11/04/2023 22:07

I find a very simple dress in a block colour, gold/silver flat sandals, and similar toned accessories always work well… I also find white/cream seems to look especially good (if you get a hint of colour - mainly freckles for me!). I got some lovely and very reasonably priced dresses in H & M last year which I swear by… spaghetti straps, flared at the waist and midi length, really flattering I’m told! I bought them in every colour they came in!

declutteringmymind · 11/04/2023 22:18

@Littlemisssunseeker it's more of a day dress. Very comfy, and swishy - more for picnics and day time stuff. I tried it on abroad and ordered it to home. The first one is more of a summer lunch date type.

declutteringmymind · 11/04/2023 22:26

I want the body for this: would suit a pear:

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 11/04/2023 22:31

I've never looked at Massimo Dutti but that dress is lovely OP.

Littlemisssunseeker · 11/04/2023 22:41

@RTHJ14 would it be this h&m dress by any chance? I bought this last summer and struggled to find anything as flattering since!

@declutteringmymind that Stories dress is gorgeous! So glam.

Would you wear any of this at home? I see people wafting around and wonder where they store it for the rest of the year 😆

WhatWouldPennyDo · 12/04/2023 16:40

Following this with interest! I go away on a few weeks and want something as described by @Littlemisssunseeker (although black washes me out).

hope you find something you like, OP!

GetYourActTogether1 · 12/04/2023 16:43

How about wearing the shorts you already have with some new tops, nice flat sandals and pretty accessories?

Littlemisssunseeker · 14/04/2023 23:37

Thanks for all the suggestions! I've been eyeing up that blue arket dress for ages but doesn't seem to be coming back in stock in my size, grrr. I like getting stuff I will wear at home as well and not just for a couple of nights a year on holidays so think that always stops me choosing anything too glam!

Found this lovely set at cos which am hoping looks as nice on me as it does on the model! Its still probably a bit boring but very in my comfort zone!

Littlemisssunseeker · 14/04/2023 23:39

Thought might look nice with some chunky gold jewellery.. fingers crossed!
