What colour shoes with a navy dress?

I have my MIL's memorial service in a couple of weeks in southern Italy, so fairly formal and quite warm. I think I'm going to wear a dark navy, midi length dress but am stuck on shoes, normally I'd go bright pink with navy but I don't think that would be appropriate for this, help!

White or nude

Navy, patent if you can find it or black patent with black tights. Not white.

For a funeral you need dark. Navy if you can get it, black if you can’t.

Navy

Pinkywoo · 09/04/2023 10:18

Damn, my extensive shoe collection has pretty much every colour but navy, black doesn't look right with it.

I think you would get away with nude in southern Italy

CindersAgain · 09/04/2023 10:30

Im sure black will be fine.

Just found some lovely light grey heels I'd forgotten about, would grey be ok do you think? It's definitely too warm for tights over there, and heels are a must at formal occasions for anyone over 14.

Grey would be fine. Tan, I was going to suggest.

EggyBreads · 09/04/2023 10:43

Black is fine. They go well together and it can look really chic.

Pinkywoo · 09/04/2023 10:55

I'm probably showing my age, but I thought black and navy were always a no?

The grey or black will be lovely.

traintraveller · 09/04/2023 12:32

Tan or nude

BabaBooPuffinsRock · 09/04/2023 12:34

For a funeral grey or nude should be fine. Coral, peach or white (with accessories accordingly) would work beautifully for other occasions.

Pinkywoo · 09/04/2023 14:04

Thanks everyone, I think I'll go with the grey.

Make sure you ask the other people what (and if!) there is a dress code.

Whilst weddings here in the south of Italy are very very formal, funerals/memorials oddly, are very much not. I've been here 30 years and been to a lot of funerals/memorials and people really just wear their everyday clothes.

The one you're attending of course may be different, but it was something that really shocked me at first as I'd imagined even more formal than other religious ceremonies would be necessary.

If it is going to be formal, I wouldn't wear nude shoes, they're very weddingy here.

PS the weather has been atrocious all Easter 6 degrees yesterday. It will probably go directly to 36 in a matter of days though.

Pinkywoo · 11/04/2023 15:00

@So1invictus thanks, both SIL are wearing full on black, long sleeves, below the knee and killer heels so I don't think I'll be over dressed, but I think you're right about non family just wearing normal clothes. I just don't want to look like the scruffy English next to my glamorous SILs!

Beige / nude / grey / tan.

Not black (too officey, too cold-weather) or navy (to air-hostessy)
