Wearing SPF daily - affordable facial SPF…?

Wiennetta · 08/04/2023 21:11

I was shopping for a new facial SPF today and on the back of one it said ‘provides 10 full applications’. It was a 50ml tube and yes, the advice is a teaspoon amount for face - so that’s 5ml. Most of the tubes are 40-50ml. So if you wear the recommended amount of sunscreen every day, you’re getting through a tube every 8-10 days! I guess I’ve never put on the correct amount, but those that do - what are you SPF recommendations? Most of the products in Superdrug/Boots I looked at (so just regular high street ones) are £10-15 for 40-50ml which would work out as £30-60 a month if used every day as directed!

I use prescription tret, so I’ve been wearing SPF daily but probably need to increase the amount I’m using - but can’t be buying a new tube every week or so. What do others do?!

I'm on tret and use the bog standard f50 Nivea sunscreen, put it on 10 mins before make up, I don't need foundation anymore

I use Gruum Skydar daily defence lotion all year. No white cast, moisturising and effective. 9 quid, but they often have offers on.

That's made from altruist ... which would be cheaper to buy

stevalnamechanger · 09/04/2023 01:33
  • altruist
  • garnier
  • boots soltan face
  • LRP

If I'm at home not wearing makeup I Kish Kish body sunscreen / altruist body

I save my posh facial ones for wearing makeup - by this I mean my Korean ones and ultra violette

I just use Soltan Once SPF50 facial sunblock - costs £10, often has a 3 for 2 offer, and lasts all day so no need to reapply. I have very pale freckle skin, can burn in 10mins on a sunny day, and it works fine for me. Bit oily, but I have dry skin so that is what I want.

They've updated this and it's currently half price at £5. I thought they had just updated the packaging but I bought some last week and the formula is definitely lighter and less oily now, it's also got a fancy pump. I used to have to wait at least 15 minutes for it to sink in before putting powder on, but it seems much lighter now. I've bought 4 tubes ready for summer.

OP, I don't think anyone uses enough sunscreen. Even a 200ml bottle of Soltan body sunscreen says it only contains 6 applications...I'm pretty on it with SPF but a bottle lasts me ages! That's why I always buy factor 50, because if you use half I figure it's like having SPF25 on...I don't know if that's scientifically true, but it makes sense!

I like the Soltan Once range because it lasts longer than most. Saves money (and faff!) as you don't have to reapply as much. It's also five star UVA rated, and UVA is the UV type that ages you I think. I also like the Nivea shine control one, but that is 3 star UVA and only lasts a couple of hours, so I only use that in the winter.

I also use the Soltan once body sunscreen on my neck and back of hands year round. Hat and sunglasses in the summer.

Agree I don’t think most people use the right amount!

I’ve bought the Soltan Once thank you everyone for the suggestions! This one looks affordable enough to use the correct amounts and I like the idea of once a day. I do have a top up spray too if I’m out and about.

@SmileyPaella @Tinks15 @PortiaWithNoBreaks the Heliocare one looks great. But it’s just that it’s £15 for 50ml - so 10 teaspoons or maybe 20 applications - so that’s me getting through a tube in less than 3 weeks! Maybe I just need to suck it up/get things on 3-for-2 and look at budget options!

A tube lasts a good couple of months for sure.

Whichever brand you choose, just make sure it's got both UVA and UVB cover and is factor 50 Smile

@SmileyPaella if you’re using the recommended amount daily, a 50ml tube would only last max 30 days. And that’s applying it only once a day!

I use LRP Anthelios 50 every day, sibling had a melanoma years ago, and also I’m hoping it will stop wrinkles!

3for2

I used Huda baked powder on top just to take the sheen off, it’s very light though.

I use the Altruist Face Fluid. It does feel a bit greasy at first but it settles and I find it great under makeup. And I have oily skin.

I’ve tried a few of the others mentioned, including Heliocare 360 and it made my skin so sore.

Also, regarding how much, I’ve forgotten to put it on and gone out and within 10/15 minutes I can feel stinging (I use Tret too). When I use it only once a day, I never have any issues.
