Is this suitable for a Royal Garden Party?

Do you think this is dress is suitable as a plus-one invited to the King's garden party?

Points to note:

  • I am only late thirties so not looking to wear a Mother of the Bride type ensemble which seem to be suggested if you google "Royal Garden Party"
  • I suffer from bloating so can't have anything tight or fitted on my tummy
  • I would like to wear something that i will wear again
  • I'm a size 12 (14 on the tummy)

If you do think it's suitable:

  • navy or nude wedges (I've heard heels sink into the grass)
  • what colour fascinator
  • what colour handbag?

Thanks!

How exciting! Unless the invitee that you are the plus one of is anyone of significant importance (eg you’re just going as an invited member of the public)I think this is beautiful and fine. I attended one almost a decade ago now, there were, as you can imagine, a mixture of individuals dressed up to the nines, amongst those in much more casual attire. I wore a knee length dress from Monsoon. I’d team yours with a cream/ivory fascinator and bag. It was a thoroughly unique and special experience, enjoy!

Very pretty. I'd pick one of the colours in the dress for shoes and accessories. The green would look nice. I think going matchy matchy for once and playing it safe might be wise.

Lovely - navy wedges definitely.

I think it's lovely. I would go for nude wedges and white accessories.

Oh that's a very pretty frock, I'm sure it would be excellent for a Palace Garden Party.
If you've decided on navy for your shoes, rather than nude, I'd pick out the light turquoise colour from the fabric for a hat, perhaps a soft straw with a bit of a floppy brim rather than a fascinator? If you wanted to dress it up more you could add a red and a navy silk flower to the hat.
For a bag, perhaps navy, or if you wanted to mix it up a little a red bag would so work well. A turquoise coloured bangle would be a nice touch too.

I’ve been to a couple of RGPs, once in my own right and once as plus-one. That’s a very pretty- and totally appropriate dress, @Acunningruse. Yes to wedges or low blocky heels to avoid stiletto-grass embarrassment. You’ll be queuing outside for quite a while so be kind to yourself re footwear. Maybe think about a hat rather than fascinator. There will be a lot of fascinators, not all of which will be flattering, whereas a hat with a brim will suit that dress and give you some shade if it’s sunny. Because the dress is so vibrant I’d be inclined to go with navy shoes and hat or nude/straw- that way the red will really pop. Have fun!
