I am a jeans and jersey person. I freelance, work for myself from home and the last "smart" office style thing I bought was over 20 years ago. Need something for a close relative's funeral. Really hard to find anything, was in the shops today and it was all summer prints and floaty maxi dresses in bright colours.

I'm a size 14-16, and 50. This will be OK won't it? And what shoes - don't have any court style shoes as I live in DM boots in the winter and sandals in summer.

It will be absolutely fine. Sorry for your loss.

Happygirl79 · 01/04/2023 17:47

The dress would be perfect for the occasion

Hadalifeonce · 01/04/2023 17:48

Do you not have any dark trousers? I was at a funeral recently and there were women in DM type boots, and other ankle boots so they are more than acceptable.

KnittingNeedles · 01/04/2023 17:49

No! I have floaty 3/4 length summer trousers, and lots of jeans and leggings. No smart office style wear at all - I just don't need clothes like that. I am hoping though that this dress is flexible enough to be used for other occasions than funerals.

That is fine. And I think any shoes that are comfortable. Being there in whatever will mean more than going out and spending loads on shoes for one day.

Sorry for your loss.

TenThousandSpoons · 01/04/2023 17:52

The dress would be perfect OP. Maybe buy some cheap black loafers from New Look?

Sorry for your loss. 💐

KnittingNeedles · 01/04/2023 17:55

Thanks all.

It's perfect. I have also been shopping today for something for my dad's funeral 😢 I have opted for something similar from M&S. I am also more a jeans person but I though dad would be so pleased I wore a dress, I will brighten it up with a colourful scalf. I am wearing flat black ankle boots and they look lovely as I am no good in heels

KnittingNeedles · 02/04/2023 17:48

It's impossible, isn't it @Jl1966 ? All wee black mini dresses, or linen, or sleeveless, or very business shift dress. There must be a call year round for basics like a black dress just as there is for blue jeans or white shirts. I really hate shopping these days.

Sorry for your loss. I know exactly what you're going through. Solidarity.

It's a plain but very useful and nice dress. You'll need pumps, low heeled courts or loafers. Your DMs won't go with it.

You will get other wear out of it. You can brighten it up by wearing coloured shoes- red for example or a bright scarf or long line cardigan.

KnittedCardi · 02/04/2023 18:16

Do you know it needs to be black? Most of the recent funerals I have been to, people are just smart, including patterned dresses and colour.

Viviennemary · 02/04/2023 18:18

Even I think it would be fine.

Snugglemonkey · 02/04/2023 18:19

Sending my condolences. This is grand. Your DMS would be grand too. Just wear black opaque tights.

Raindropsonuebells · 02/04/2023 18:20

Sorry for your loss OP
The dress is perfect

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 02/04/2023 18:27

It looks perfect, both for a funeral and as something useful for the future.

Get any black shoes you like, loafers, ballet flats, court shoes etc.

It is probably a bit early for bare legs and sandals and a bit warm for knee length boots, it doesn't look as though it will suit DMs but otherwise go with what you fancy.

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/04/2023 18:45

Is it a cremation or a burial?
The reason I ask is if it's the latter then I wouldn't wear heels due to the likelihood of sinking into the grass.
(If it was me I would wear knee length boots, but then I feel the cold).

BeretRaspberry · 02/04/2023 19:07

I recently wore something very similar from M&S to two funerals. I wore Snag tights, flat black shoes and a wool coat (grey, because I don’t have black).

SirVixofVixHall · 02/04/2023 19:13

Sorry for your loss OP, that dress is completely fine for a funeral.

AFlockOfTigers · 02/04/2023 19:18

Loafers would probably be more comfortable than completely flat shoes, and they're widely available quite cheaply at the moment.

Dress is absolutely fine and looks very comfortable which is important for a stressful day. Sorry for your loss.

The reviews say it's got weight to the fabric, which is good too.

I have a patterned version and it's actually a really good quality fabric that hangs well
