What coat/ jacket(s) with long skirts and wide leg jeans?

I’ve recently bought a few things that are a bit different to my usual silhouette and I’m struggling with outerwear to go with them. I’m in the north east of England so (for me) it’s not until proper summer when it’s warm enough to go out with just a light jacket, or nothing at all. And obviously it’s still pretty cold and wet at the moment everywhere.

I bought a maxi skirt and a maxi dress from Me+Em on eBay, and also 2 pairs of their jeans - 1 ‘straight’ leg (but actually pretty wide) and 1 very wide leg. Photos of everything attached - the skirt and dress are both a bit longer on me than the models, very much full length.

Jeans look ok with my big khaki parka, but I think maybe something shorter with them would look better, and I’ve no idea at all what looks good over long skirts! I’m planning to wear the skirt/dress with black Grenson Nanette boots now, and black or white trainers in the summer.

I’ve got a khaki shacket thing that’s good for warmer weather, and a very old black leather bomber jacket which I think is coming back in fashion - but I want something more for the in betweeny weather. My other main winter coats are a plain black puffer from Uniqlo and a navy wool wrap coat, both of which come to mid calf. I do have quite a big collection of coats and jackets but I feel like the overall look of everything is so much looser now that most of my stuff feels very dated.

So I wear either my denim jacket or biker jacket for a night out. Daytime with those I would either wear my parker or a wool blazer. It's a tricky time for coats!

TheVeryThing · 31/03/2023 13:50

Lovely purchases. I always struggle with coats or jackets in spring/ summer. I find that shorter is definitely better with long skirts or wide leg trousers. I do see people wearing a long flowing trench coat also, it wouldn't suit me as i am short but might work for you.
I saw a gorgeous light coloured, short peacoat on &other stories recently, something like that might work?

Whathappenedto · 31/03/2023 13:52

I would wear something that ends around the waist/top of hips, if the items are high-ish waisted. Could you try a puffa that was a bit shorter than the one you have?
If it's cold and pissing it down, I wear a beaten up old hooded Barbour jacket with long dresses/ wider jeans and I like the way it looks- might not be your style though!

Niftythrifter · 31/03/2023 13:54

With wide leg jeans the best coat I think is a coat that nips/ draws attention to your waist to balance the proportions of your look. Something like this but shorter and single breasted maybe.

CaptainWentworth · 31/03/2023 14:03

That’s a beautiful coat @Niftythrifter. I think my belted navy coat kind of works like that In emphasising the waist (hoping!)

@TheVeryThing I did think of a trench coat, although I am not that tall (5’4”). I have one of the Hobbs ones which I’ve always loved, but it’s quite fitted and ends above my knee. It looks great with pencil skirts and narrow trousers (ie how I used to dress for work, back in the ancient past before kids and the pandemic!) but it doesn’t quite work now. I’d love to get a longer looser one but DH would definitely raise an eyebrow as it would look (to him!) so similar to what I already have. Having said that, have you seen any you like?

@Whathappenedto i have also been thinking of a shorter puffer but wasn’t sure I could justify it now we’re supposedly at the end of winter. It is such a tricky time of year! I do have a short red Arcteryx puffer but it’s very much an ‘outdoors’ jacket and also quite fitted so just looks a bit dated. And I think it has oil stains on it…

Oh yes the other thing I was wondering about was a warmer bomber jacket - saw this one but maybe a bit too long (also I missed the discount they did recently)

I wear this blazer with wide leg trousers

What coat/ jacket(s) with long skirts and wide leg jeans?
America12 · 31/03/2023 14:11

Blazer with the trousers ? Lots around atm.
Or even with the dress ?

minidancer · 31/03/2023 14:14

Im having a similar problem with coats. I feel that the fashion has changed a lot and as you say it's hard to style coats with wider leg trousers when you aren't that tall (I'm 5'5) I also don't like the bottoms of my trousers getting wet! I think the hush jacket might be too long, but I love the blazer above. What about one of the shearling bomber jackets, although not great in wet weather

CaptainWentworth · 31/03/2023 14:29

I always love the idea of shearling, but really it’s so impractical. I do have one All Saints shearling jacket from years ago, but it was always either not cold enough or too wet to wear it, and again it’s dated now.

I’m wanting stuff to wear on my office days really - not sure if the dress will dress down enough for that, but the other stuff will be ok- and I have a 15 min walk as part of my commute so I do need to wear something quite practical. I don’t really wear blazers as I always feel they are only for proper grownups (ie not me) and in the past I’d wear a proper coat over a suit unless v warm weather. A pp mentioned a Barbour, which I do have so might try that too….

Deffo looking for a trench coat and a shorter bomber so please say if you’ve found any good ones!

Obviously you need a blazer.
