Help me get out of stripy tops!

My wardrobe is full of them! They are so easy to wear but I feel so unimaginative in them.

What alternative tops do you wear for “everyday” to mix things up a bit? Florals are a no for me.
I wonder if blouses/shirts are the way forward?
i’m 48 and a size 10

Do you suit plain black?

Timeforachangeisitnot · 31/03/2023 09:26

I like a stripy top, but I also wear blouses/ shirts, in a sort of Pucci -look alike pattern, which I bought years ago from Hawes & Curtis. They still get a lot of compliments, but they are man made fibres so if that’s not for you, then perhaps look at Mint Velvet - I have a couple of silk tops from them.

White Stuff is a bit marmite on here, but they have some jersey tops with patterns that aren't floral. I get them on Otrium sometimes if it's the wrong season for getting them from White Stuff directly.
The one I'm wearing today is french navy with dots in cloud patterns and I feel fairly smart in it. Also, it has pockets.

I also love blouses from Joanie who do non-florals - I have camping, dinosaur, mushrooms etc.

If you prefer plain colour jersey tops, you could try Gudrun Sjoden.

Also a bit marmite on here!
But I like the saturated colours.

I am trying to buy more plain shirts as my menopausal belly looks better in them than in stripes ( though I love stripes). I don't do florals, but I have a denim shirt from M and S, a couple of blouses from Esprit, and some shirts from Mango. All these are cotton or viscose. In summer I wear linen shirts from Zara or M and S over a tee or vest.

Go for block colours.

Something like this would be a good start

Maybe something like this might be good too. There are 30 colours in this particular t-shirt

The links are to the Next (IE) website but I'm sure the UK site has similar.

I do suit plain black. I have some plain tops but sometimes feel that going plain and classic is a fine line between classic and dull/nondescript - for me at least.

i shall revisit black tops of my youth 😀

45 and watching with interest. I think I’m going to head down the nice shirt and jeans route but finding nice casual shirts is harder than it seems.

kublacant · 31/03/2023 09:59

I’m drawn to those Pucci print style of blouses @Timeforachangeisitnot

it seems you all go for blouses as well
as tops for day to day. Working at home for years ( well before covid) has made me see blouses as “formal” 😁. Silly really!

lots of good suggestions of alternatives here - I will break the stripy habit 🤣

Esprit is very underrated for nice shirts and blouses, casual and formal.

BansheeofInisherin · 31/03/2023 10:43

Lilly and Me looks nice. Somehow I always look like a sofa in florals. I am not that large, just carrying all my weight in my tummy! I don't think clingy jersey tops and tees suit me any more. Shirts skim over the problem area.

LadyR77 · 31/03/2023 12:11

I buy a lot of tops from Joanie Clothing - they do some really lovely stuff.

Blueuggboots · 31/03/2023 13:21

I embrace my stripey tops! They're my uniform. I feel comfy, they suit me. I love them!!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 31/03/2023 13:22

I was exactly the same. I had most of Joules harbour tops in every colour, post menopausal tummy looked awful so I took all to charity shops and I now wear " popover blouses" and collarless denim shirts
I've bought lots BNWTs on Vinted secondhand denim( as it wears well)
I genuinely enjoy wearing them, and don't feel like a sack of potatoes anymore

Think of them as shirts, rather than blouses?

I am older than you but I’m loving the blazer trend right now and have bought various colours. You can sling them over anything.

having said that I’m currently wearing a striped top but in my defence it’s my only one.
