What do you wear to a house party?

Been invited to a 40th birthday house party, it's from 4pm onwards and I'll hardly know anyone.

I know that the birthday boy's wife is very glam but no dress code. I did ask and was just told everyone will make an effort.

What on earth shall I wear? I don't want to turn up over or undressed!

My guess is that if it is a house party that starts at 4pm there will be a range of outfits and I don’t think you will look out of place whatever you wear.

But of the host’s wife likes to dress glam I would see that as a cue to wear the fanciest outfit you have your eye on.

Love a house party. Don't choose and outfit that relies on heels though as you may need to remove shoes. I'd go wide trousers and simple top and bling jewellery.

I'd absolutely take the opportunity to wear flats as likely to take them off anyway. Maybe for me something like a black grungey sparkly type dress with boots.
Orrr I'd possibly go for wide leg trousers with a fitted top, there is quite a bit in Zara or RI.
My recent favourite outfit for a casual but fashion night out was split hem wide jeans with a short black corset top and a black blazer worn like a cape...I wore tie leg heels tied around the bottom of the jeans but an outfit like that would translate well to a house party, and you could just wear trainers or DMs or something

Recently went to one in a black, flattering jumpsuit with a bright pink cami that kept me decent.

A jumpsuit, and some snazzy jewellery, with flats.

Definitely not heels, even when they were the default option for going out-out they looked weird in a private house. Agree with others on wide-legged trousers or a jumpsuit- you want something comfortable for potential sofa-lounging as well as looking like you’ve made an effort. Loose/floppy/slinky in glam fabrics like velvet, silk or satin, rather than tight or short is the way I tend to go. Layers in case it’s freezing, and socks in your bag if you aren’t wearing them, in case you have to take your shoes off. Which is another reason for wearing trousers of some sort.
