What to wear in Rome

Hi my husband and I are going to Rome for a couple of days next week and I can’t decide what the weather is likely to be ! I had hoped it would be warm enough for bare legs trainers, summer dress and jacket during the day but now I am not so sure ! I appreciate that it will colder in the evening - main thing for me is comfy feet and I don’t really have any comfy shoes other than trainers or knee high boots ! Any thoughts ?

Anyone been in August? I've booked then realised its probably going to be unbearably hot, I'm not sure how I'll cope but I'll have to! What should I aim to pack? Where can I find stylish cool dresses? And a hat for someone who doesn't suit summer hats? (I can only wear beanies/berets in the colder months)

I was in Rome in August 21 and it was 40 degrees every day. The day I went to the Colosseum it was 45. I live here, over the years I've acclimatised to it, but it was tough!
There are street vendors everywhere selling big straw hats for about 5 euros. I wore my usual summer uniform of wide legged trousers so can't help with frocks, sorry!

40?! 😥I'm so looking forward to it but not sure how I'll cope. I think I'll have to go out early morning then late afternoon into the evening.

I'm going next week too, this is really helpful thank you!

We go in August quite regularly (family) and my biggest recommendation is to take a big bottle you can fill up from the street water pumps, give up on any decorum and just pour it over your head when it gets too much 😂
I'm only half joking, those water pumps are a life saver and I usually give up on looking nice - I'm just hot and sweaty anyway. But go for floaty material. Everyone recommends linen but I find it scratchy and hot. Flat sandals are an absolute must.

This definitely won't help you blend in in Italy, but - in the heat of summer, I use an umbrella as a parasol. Loads of people do this in Asia, so I am not sure why it's considered eccentric in Europe, but I don't care. And at least you can easily take it down, if you fleetingly need to pretend to be normal 😀

Thanks everyone time for a rethink then will take my trusty boots ! Are leggings under a midi dress a complete and utter fashion crime ??

Yes. I think only toddlers get away with that look.

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow this had crossed my mind tbh! Plus a set of those fans you put around your neck! But yes, water bottles all round @Maraudingmarauders it's just finding the right dresses with a bit of shape but also staying loose and allowing heat to escape!

I've been in August and I don't do well in heat. We just made sure we were out of the sun 12-4pm - extra long lunches, galleries etc etc. I won't pretend it was ideal but it was do-able. Enjoy!

@Floisme thanks, fortunately our apartment is central so I think go out for breakfast then hide out and back out later. I just want maybe three good dresses that I can feel smartish in.
